Good Morning all, I registered last night and hopefully this will appear as my introduction. If not, please excuse an old chap's limited abilities. I cannot begin to thank you all for the mine of information that is so freely shared. I bought a second-hand Super Cub a few months ago and thought that before I make it a "lawn dart" I would do some of the modifications suggested before a maiden flight. I have never flown an rc aircraft before and I am looking forward to getting things as well set up as possible before the maiden experience for the Cub and myself! I have always loved anything that can fly and as I can't afford lessons in the real thing, then my Super cub will do admirably. I believe that it will be just the right aircraft for an old boy like me, hand to eye co-ordination not as good as the young ones I am afraid. I will try to take some pictures of the Cub, presently named Scarlet Lady in honour of my eldest son's girlfriend as her name is Scarlet (more on this later perhaps). Well, once again, thank you all for your sharing of tips and knowledge, much appreciated, from crazyhorse, never too old to learn!

Thank you for your welcome comments gentlemen, from Alaska and Texas. iandhunt, flight lieutenant Sir, it seems from your comment I have your attention/interest regarding the name of my aircraft? It is just that the name in Chinese roughly translates into Scarlet, LOL. Perhaps not what you had in mind? LOL again. I have recently purchased another S/C in appalling condition, but I am now in the process of making her look her best once more. Please forgive me for not showing images at the moment, but I am still reading how to do this and do not want to try the patience of all of you by asking questions when I have not read the instructions and attempted to complete the task. I hope to post photo's as soon as I can understand how to do this, until next time.....

Welcome to the SCC, crazyhorse, from another old geezer in the next-door county.
Keep praying for an end to all this wind and rain in the southern counties. My thumbs are seizing up from lack of exercise.
Remember, if you haven't flown before, try to find an experienced flyer to help at first. It can save a lot of carnage and frustration.
Good luck!

There is a forum called " how to post a picture" on our boards. Follow the links and you should be able to post a photo no problem. No need for the "sir", I was enlisted a few years ago...too smart to become an officer.....well, too smart and not motivated enough. Scarlet Lady is a fantastic name I think. Just make sure you treat her right and do some mods to get the most out of the Super Cub! Good luck!

Thank you mature fox, or merci beaucoup que vous êtes très aimable mon ami rusé as they say in some parts of the world! I have recently obtained a flight simulator which I am hoping to get many hours of practice upon before embarking on the nerve jangling maiden flight. My lovely wife is very supportive of my new hobby (yes really, we have been together a long time) the next aircraft will be named after her good self and she is as excited about the maiden flight as I am. I will try and get her to be my camerawoman and post a video for all to laugh at. I will go prepared with a large plastic bag, dustpan and brush, epoxy resin and tape! Or perhaps, it will fly as I imagine, high, smooth, slow and ladylike and land like a feather on a windless day.

Warm? welcome from Yorkshire. Wind up here dying down tommorrow to about 5 mph so maybe its doable if your weather is the same. I too only got my supercub after christmas and know no one else who could help me with the controls. Best advice I can give is turn into wind, apply full power and hand launch it. It will climb on its own. Get up high - 150 feet plus and cut the throttle to about half, it flies really well and smoothly on half throttle. Set your trim so it does not appear to either climb or descend at this throttle setting and it is set up. Apply a little more throttle to climb and a little less to descend just as you would in a full size aircraft. The Cub responds to this with pleasure. If you get into difficulties with the controls, let go the sticks and with height to spare the cub will sort itself out - with ACT disconnected (essential as anyone on here will tell you). Altitude really is your friend, low and slow on the other hand is a disaster in the making, although it may seem safer - it isn't. Watch out for trees!!!!!! and don't worry too much the cub is a tough old bird and can take a lot of punishment. If you have not seen it, have a look at one of my vids and note the motor RPM and how the cub responds. www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2mPgh9-R-g

Your video is a great example of how well you fly. Yes, I listened to the "revs" but also got great enjoyment from looking at your flight area. Just a shame about the huge chimneys spouting force goodness knows what. I have had the great good fortune to have flown in a high wing trainer for real. The pilot was young but very experienced and allowed me to turn hard using the ailerons and rudder combined, we lost height very quickly in a dive but I adjusted throttle and elevator and all was right with the world again! it was awesome, just by Beachy Head in Sussex. My eldest son was a passenger in the back, trying not to be airsick! It so was good to be trusted to throw the aircraft around, looking for different landmarks. We flew over my lovely Mum-in-laws house, going as low as was permitted over a residential area and she saw me "buzzing" her house. If that doesn't get you hooked on aircraft, nothing will. Thank you once again.

Welcome Crazy Horse. I've only been here a month or so but a lot of good advice. Like the red accents on your Cub, should make it more visible with all the snow we're getting here!
Where in Sussex are you? Anywhere near Billingshurst?

SussexFlyer, Thank you so much for your appreciation of a work in progress. you should have seen her before I started! Please be kind enough to view and comment (good or bad, no problem) when I post further pictures of the "restoration". Well, I live not a million miles away from you, about 40mins and 23 odd miles drive, in Patcham, just outside (thankfully) Brighton. To be honest, I haven't been able to fly her yet, not only because the weather has been so bad (for as long as I can now remember) but I still have to complete modifications. But, I am getting a bit of practice on my flight simulator, I know that it is not the same as the real thing outside, but it might help an old boy like me when I get to maiden her.

Crazy Horse, just noticed the RNZAF roundel on the fin. My partner is a Kiwi.
When you get it ready for the first flight be sure to choose a really calm day.

Sussex, Great to hear! My eldest son's girlfriend is also a Kiwi, well actually Chinese but has lived in NZ and Oz since an early age, that is why the Cub is known as Scarlet Lady (her name in Chinese translates roughly as Scarlet) and the lettering is CHI-WI. What is your partner's name? Someone said on a post, name your Cub after the one you love and you can spend/buy what you want. My next project is to resurrect another battered Cub and name it after my wife. She is also going to choose the colour! I think I want /need to get that and that and that.....HAHA

Everytime I jump into these "overseas" conversations I admit I am at a loss sometimes/all-the-time. RNZAF = Royal New Zealand Air Force? Kiwi = . Oz is somewhere in Australia or is it Australia.....or not Kansas anymore? Sorry to hijack the conversation but I am only understanding at best 65% of it....
