LOL! Hi iandhunt. Sorry if it all gets confusing for you. RNZAF, correct in your assumption. The symbol/emblem of NZ is a Kiwi, a bit like the bald eagle for America I suppose, or a bulldog for England. Kiwi, a endearment bestowed upon a New Zealand citizen. Oz is Australia, no worries, you haven't hijacked anything, great to hear from you, just trying to stop crying with laughter, best thing I have read and enjoyed all day! Thanks beyond words!

Crazy Horse, I did suspect a NZ connection but missed the Chinese one!
iandhunt, Yes RNZAF is indeed Royal New Zealand Air Force. The roundel is as per the RAF (Royal Air Force) one but the central red spot is replaced by a red Kiwi bird, the symbol of New Zealand, a bit like the Eagle for USA or the maple leaf for Canada. (Australia do similar but use a red kangaroo.) And, logically, therefore, someone from NZ is known as a Kiwi. Btw, if you want to annoy a Kiwi or Aussie (an Australian) just tell him the two countries (or accents) are pretty much the same. That would be like saying a Canadian is pretty much the an American! And, yes, I got the Kansas/Wizard of Oz reference!
EDIT: Sorry for the repetition, I now see there is a page 2 in this thread and Crazy Horse has beat me to it with the clarification!

Many thanks to Sussexflyer, I missed the Kansas/Oz reference, even though I saw the film many times.
iandhunt, only 78%? what bits have I baffled you with? If you get to England, look me up, we can confuse each other over a few tinnies and some tucker. Bring your sunnies with you if you come here in Summer, oh, and the Cub!

Aussie here and no we do not sound the bloody same, lol Laugh a plenty in this post... Our Air Force is the RAAF, or as its now combined its under the umbrella of the DOD - Department of Defence. So who knows what to call it. Iandhunt if you come to Oz... which is much better than NZ let me know.

iandhunt Looking at the pic it's easy to see why a Super Cub flies somewhat better than a Kiwi (bird and fruit!) Btw, if there was any doubt about its nationality, the bird is rather unsubtly perched on silver fern, another symbol of NZ. The fern's leaves are silvery on the underside. Kiwis (that's the people, not the bird or fruit!) are passionate about their silver fern and the All Blacks (that's their rugby team!) have a silver fern on their shirts. I can see this opening up into a discussion about football vs rugby. And when I say football I mean proper football not that strange game you play your side of the pond And only last week you thought this was a forum just about Cubs...

bpj80, You are absolutely right those Kiwis and you Aussies do not sound the same, even an old Pommie like me can tell the difference. My eldest son has been working and touring around your fantastic country and also NZ for the last year and a half, so I get a lot of reports from him. He loves both countries but thinks that OZ is more suited to him at the moment. Saying that, he said NZ is probably a good place to retire to, when he gets to be an old boy like me! He is currently enjoying 35C there whilst I am freezing my nuts off at home.
Sussexflyer, As for the footy discussion, FWIW my lad is supporting the Sydney Swans, seen them play and says that it is great that supporters are all mixed together, bit of friendly banter, etc. Only thing he misses is being surrounded by like minded supporters and the chanting. Over here, supporters are always separated, tells you something I suppose. As for the symbol of a fern representing NZ, guess what is on the bottom surface of the elevator on Scarlet Lady?

A pic of her fern. I know the elevator part looks a bit untidy, some tape here and there, but nothing is perfect, not even me. I thought I would continue the fern theme with the black and white on part of the elevator. More pics to follow if anyone is interested.

And of course, while Australia is famous for its kangaroos, New Zealand is proud of its zebras!

Oh, Sussexflyer, Sometimes I think you are ahead of me with all my little "subtle" additions to this post. It would seem that you have a great insight and knowledge, as well as a bloody good sense of humour! ;D

iandhunt, only 78%? what bits have I baffled you with? If you get to England, look me up, we can confuse each other over a few tinnies and some tucker. Bring your sunnies with you if you come here in Summer, oh, and the Cub! Sounds good....after we jump back across the pond we can end up in Boston, further discussing our differences and confusions over a grindah (Sandwich), a Sam, (Samuel Adams Boston Lager) and some chowdah (New England Clam Chowder). We can head to the pahk (Fenway Park) and watch the Sox play and hit the T (The Train) back to the harbah! (harbor). I also have got to confess that in America, if you are from Boston and one of those Midwestern fools mistakes you for someone from New York or New Jersey it tends to be irritating at best! "And when I say football I mean proper football not that strange game you play your side of the pond " I understand that our game may seem strange, but I can't sit all day and watch a game which has a final score is 1-0.......unless there is alcohol involved!!!!! In which case save me a seat! ;D Alright guys........time to fly since the wind died down and it is only 37 degrees BELOW freezing! C'MON Sussex, give me some SUN!!!

Oh, this thread is fun! That is what life should be about, if possible. Thanks for the explanations, really required!
So your "football" is this where the players keep handling the darn ball, so why do you call it football? We call that rugby, but our lads don't wear any protection except for a gum-shield to stop their teeth getting smashed up in the scrums. But your chaps seem to wear armour and helmets and crash into each other, then plays stops, why? Then you all look at each other, charge, fall over and then the game stops once again. Zzzzzzz. Beer required!
As for the Sox, is that a few chaps playing rounders? Our ladies/ wives do that mostly, while we fly our Super Cubs, (after they have been trusted to charge our Li-Po batteries) then they make sandwiches and pour the beer so that all is ready when we have finished flying. Then they wait on us, tell us all what a wonderful time they have had and how much they want to be trusted to video our flights. It works for us, what about you chaps?
As always, said with great respect!

Sorry, all I heard was beer......ummmm, yah, sounds about right! This has been an eye-opening experience to say the least!!! One day when I am infinitely richer I might take my cub around the world....but for now....still frozen solid!!! [shadow=red,left,300][/shadow]

.but for now....still frozen solid!!! Ah, you should be in New Zealand, they have hot winters. Actually, that's not quite right (as my Kiwi partner keeps correcting me) - they have hot summers, it's just that they have summer when we have winter and vice versa! I do try to get my head around it, really I do, but I can't quite imagine having Christmas in summer. And it's the same in Oz: 'Hey, Bruce, sling another turkey on the barbie!'
