Haha, only pullin ur chain Dill. Good work with the HH comms. As much as I agree its a prob that should be addressed. If they do anything, they'll prob only make it big enough to fit their stock 1300mah lipo and everyone will still rip the batt box apart to squeeze in their 2200mah packs. Just a thought. Though I do agree with the fragility of lipos its a safety issue that needs addressing even for the stock batt as after all the biggest market for this plane is probably newbs with no prior lipo handling experience like myself.
Dill you are truly a peoples champion!

thanks guys. what can I say, I do what I can
If they do fix the issue, I think it's most likely that they'll just change the lipo they supply with the super cub. The cub hasn't changed in like 5 years, I get the impression they like it just the way it is.
There's ample room for a 1300mah battery in there if they made it a bit thicker and not as long, and it wouldn't effect the CG

The British Model Flying Association is the representative body for model flyers in Great Britain.
The latest edition of their monthly magazine contains another warning about LiPo batteries.
Apparently, one of their own officers was charging a 3S pack in the rear of his car with the tailgate open when luckily someone spotted that it had burst into flames and was able to sweep the battery out of the vehicle before serious damage was caused.
He was using top quality equipment and the charger was a top-line brand. But, says the magazine, "the fire would appear to have been started by the charger's inability to recognise that a 3 cell pack was being charged on a 4 cell setting. He found that by overriding certain parameters, the problem could easily be replicated."
As the BMFA article concludes: "Remember, it CAN happen to you! Follow the battery manufacturer's instructions and don't leave it to chance."

Exactly the reason why I cant believe more SCC members have bought these from me! cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150599287483Tut tut tut......one day only, up until midnight 24/05/11 £3.00 +PnP only to SCC members who pm me for a passphrase. Was that the article that had the picture of the puffed up pack? I noticed this whilst flicking through the mag last night. Whilst mentioning the mag did either of you see the advert for a stack of warbirds (ME-109 as the main picture, .50 (leccy-able) and .90 sizes I think), they look lovely. Also the free flight 2011 compo is coming up...best get them paper planes made!!! ;D Nice item John, however as you know, I have no need for any more

What would make customers happy is a brushless Cub LP with stock electrics. This would mess up the proprietary purchases. Who knows, maybe all those burned up ESC/RX that are replaced turn into DX6i and bind-n-fly purchases down the road. We all know every newbie beats the crap out of their Cub and the % that ends up on this forum is miniscule. The vast majority buy from the LHS, and Horizon affiliates. I know commercial mold injections (cowl, battery box) are expensive. Plus it would have to fit the fuse (more modification) and the electrics would all be changed. So all that stuff that was amortized LONG LONG ago would have to be chucked to start over. I'm sure the cost to make that after all these years has got to be pretty low. Not many planes have a lifespan or following like that. Very True... They do now sell a 2.4 Bind N fly Cub LP the guy told me... had no idea , wish I knew that before getting the 27mhz version! But as far as battery, what would it cost them to do the mod that everyone has been doing to insert battery vertically (move esc/rx to side with velcro)... you would think they just would have done that ! I bought the Super Cub LP BNF... 2.4 ghz, spektrum stuff in it... the battery box is very small.... you need a shoehorn to get the 3 cell 1300 Mah battery that comes with it in the box.

In addition to the shoehorn, you also need some metal clamps and a firebucket for when the thing bursts into flames... just ask horizon -oh wait, horizon are denying any knowledge of this problem, my bad

OK we all know how the problems with the Batt / box and the dangers of putting battery in and out. LOL on HZ not knowing the dangers BS they knew before they put it on the market. I bought my cub and was flying it never thinking about any dangers until I found this site. and read all your guys posts on this I sat back thinking how lucky I was nothing happened as far as burning the house down or worse. anyway that being said I think HZ is asking for a law suite if someone gets hurt or dies. witch could have been avoided if HZ just made a very simple mod to the battery box. I've made mods to mine like you all did just thinking of the people who don't find forums like this to warn them. I think to make HZ stand up and take notice the dangers and get them to redesign the battery box. is to contact the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU & the PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION and file a complaint.

Actually, I wrote hobbyzone before horizon, and they said they were aware of the issue, but it has nothing to do with them because Horizon build the plane.
Reporting their negligence to the appropriate authorities may not be such a bad idea, as far as a risk assessment goes, even if there's only a small chance of it occurring, if it can potentially result in death then should still be considered a serious risk.
As far as doging liability goes, I suppose this thread can now function as a public record that Horizon IS aware of this issue.

It looks like your Lipo scraped the screw inside the compartment that houses the battery. I would suggest everyone replace that screw with a smaller bolt.

I had the exact same thing happen to me today. Snapped it in without alot of force. Then the smoke came. Threw it out quickly and after the smoke cleared, look about the same as the original picture of this message post - toast. Funny thing it blew out on the opposite end of the leads. Now, the inside of my SC has been painted black.
