I just finished putting ailerons on a HZ Super Cub.
I followed some of the advice on making ailerons. Then I just put a servo on the top of the wing that controlled the rudder and bam. I have an old 3 chanel cub with ailerons.
I am not sure how this is going to fly tomorrow. I have flown my trojan with a little help with my more experienced friend. But I am a little nervous. I am just happy that I left the dihederal in the wing. I hope it still glides the same.

Well, you're going to have a mixed bag. Rudder controls wings with dihedral. Aileron works best with minimal to no dihedral. Leaving dihedral in defeats the ailerons to some extent. How much? Frankly, I don't know. A little is OK. The more dihedral, the worse ailerons work.
So....you have no rudder and possibly compromised R/L turning.
I think it would be better if you mostly removed the dihedral.

How do you have ailerons with only three channels?
You need one for elevator, one for rudder, and one for throttle. Don't you need at least a 4ch for ailerons?

no rudder... Hoping it flies decent... I have seen a set uo like this fly before and it actually does ok. I hope mine does OK also.

Cool, man! You could have kept the rudder. Could control the two ailerons and rudder with the same servo; kinda like servo mixing but with just one servo instead of two. Just attach another control rod leading to the rudder arm... may not be possible where you placed the servo now but would be neat to try. Also, the PZ servos may not be strong enough to push all those control surfaces all by itself.

If ailerons are going to be your only flight control for steering, you probably will need to flatten out your wing. I've read of people just taping it flat to get rid of most of the dihedral, perhaps you could try that? I wouldn't trust the stock servos for ailerons either, especially if you're running two ailerons off of one servo.

I am using a eflight mico servo. I know its small...But like you said... I am a test pilot and I will update you on the performance.

On my 4-ch stock/sport park fliers I haven't found the rudder worth much besides take off control. Pure rudder just makes it kink over and dive. If you are not used to rudder on the L thumb and have to control this with R elevator at the same time it's looking for disaster.
I've tried mixing rudder + ailerons. At this stage I don't see why there is such a big deal discussion over it. For me on numerous planes it provides little to no benefit. Doesn't hurt though.
On a flat foamy with HUGE rudder the rudder is very effective and a primary control once you start getting the L thumb trained. BTW-that saved one of my planes when an aileron died in flight and got stuck part way down. Plane went into a nasty death spiral. With judicious rudder and elevator control I was able to get it back up, turn it around (it was leaving town fast), and bring it in safely. Just a few weeks before I would absolutely not have been able to do that.

Well I took her up and it flied amazing. Took some amazing turns and controlled like a dream. It was really windy so I really had to used the control surfaces but everything worked out great. I am still running the stock NON lipo battery so its really under powered and hard to control with the wind. So needless to say I landed perfect. Then I was like...... I will take her up again... I took her in a figure 8 pattern to test out the ailerons again and a gust of wind as I was turning hit my super light foamie and flipped her up sided down about 30 feet from the ground and she hit the ground so hard she blew up. I mean 5 pieces... It is a total loss. I am not sure if the motor is going to be fixable. The custom wing is still in good shape so I am happy about that. But man....It was full throttle because I was fighting the wind and she just turned upside down and BOOM.... It is completely pilot error, I let her get a little low and banked a little hard... So I am bummed but what the heck. It should be back in the air after about $30 worth of parts. What can you do!!!!!!!

Unlucky mate.
At least super cub parts are cheap - hopefully you don't have to wait too long for them.

Wish me luck again for tomorrow...

LOL
Good effort mate, that didn't take long. What parts did you have to replace?
Don't forget to re-trim the controls, the aerodynamics of the aircraft may be a little different now!
PS have you ever considered using the bomb drop module to drop CO2 canisters onto fires? just a thought

Only just seen this thread. I did a similar mod to a mates SC as he didn't want to swap out his electrics. It works OK as you have found although he gets a slower roll rate than the full conversion. Shame you stacked it but with the repairs you've mentioned it should be a bit more stable is the wind now as it'll be heavier, with a cost to your climb rate.

What ever happened to our test pilot?
Perhaps his mysterious disappearance could be explained by his prototype crashing out of control into his face and doing brain damage? I hope that's not the case, but it is a possibility, right?
Just to be on the safe side, until we clear this up, it would be best if no one else tries this mod until we establish the state of welfare of our test pilot. We may have inadvertently come across a design for a death-trap here people!
Assuming the worst here- Jjonyoung, if you get this message, we here at the SuperCubClub all wish you a speedy recovery from your injuries, and when you regain the use of your limbs we would love to hear from you.
