60buick.....just FYI it may not roll at all. I have 2 wings that have smaller ailerons and it will roll over onto it's wing but not finish the roll. I hope you have better luck than I did with them. I had to go bigger to get any real performance out of them. Good Luck and keep us posted on performance. Kevin

Thanks for the tip. I can easily extend them into the wing and just dial down the throw through the transmitter.

I had a few questions about the aileron mod. How would the flight characteristics change if the ailerons were short as opposed to long also how would the flight characteristics differ if the ailerons were closer to the fuselage or the wing tips? What setup would be most advantageous for a beginner with some experience looking for a good aileron trainer and hoping to move into a 4 channel mid-wing scale or aerobatic plane?

Q.) How would the flight characteristics change if the ailerons were short as opposed to long A.) The bigger the Control Surface the more it can deflect the air in a certain direction. Short Ailerons would not redirect as much air as longer wider ailerons. With control surfaces its all about how big they are and where they are located.

I do know that the closer to the wingtip the aileron is the more it will effect the bank of the plane. A more experienced flyer will have to explain this in more detail. (I am new as well)
Q.) What setup would be most advantageous for a beginner with some experience looking for a good aileron trainer A.) I can tell you from my research about the best setup would be a 12"-15" long 2" Deep Aileron with about a 20% deflection would yeild the best results. You can control the amount of deflection with a computer radio or by adjusting the push rods manually. I have 12" X 1.5" ailerons and well, I wish I would have made them at least 2" deep. As stated in other threads this wing has such a thick airfoil the wind will simply roll off the wing and not be effected as much by a small aileron.
The Cub makes for a GREAT aileron trainer just Please read lots and lots of threads before diving into it. Do you already owne your SuperCub?

Thanks surjer for the info. I've had my supercub for three and half weeks tomorrow. So far I've found it to be an excellent (repair friendly ) first flyer. I've broken the wing in more than one place and cracked the aft part of the fuse, but with some epoxy the plane flys as straight as the day it came out of the box(probably going to replace the airframe before upgrades.) Since I've got the plane I've been flying about three battery packs a day(less at first and more since I've got more comfortable with it). Today the weather was perfect for flying and I "flew" through both of my battery packs twice. I'm quite taken with r/c flying. Fortunately I live on a farm with plenty of open space. The only thing between me and the sky is a dead battery. While the super cub is a great plane I'd like to get more aerobatic practice. The plane does great dives, loops,touch and goes and turns can be a lot of fun too. I' haven't done much with inverted flight yet. I know can be done but the way I have my plane set up she constantly loses altitude under inverted flight (I had a really close call this morning). I'm thinking though if I adjust the control horns I can get it to climb while inverted or at least hold altitude. Currently I'm looking for a good deal on a Dx 6 tx and rx setup and hopefully in the course of my upgrade I'll get a brushless setup with Lipo batteries. That should keep me busy/happy over the winter. P.S I see you hail from VA Beach. I live in southern Maryland maybe we could fly sometime.

Tried the ailerons today. Turns were nice and sharp with ail & rudder input. Rolls were slow, very slow. It has been a good experience to do the brush-less and aileron upgrade, but i have decided to take the cub back to stock electronics, lock the ailerons with epoxy and fly it with a lipo, this will be my chill out plane with a little bit of zip. I will put the brush-less set up in my Mini pulse for her maiden flight.

This is good feedback SCC. When I am ready for ailerons, I plan to get a plane that is designed for them. I decided that when I learned one should eliminate the SC wing dihedral for ideal aileron operation. Seemed like one would have to morph the SC into something it really wasn't.

Diheldral is good. Without it flying nice and slow is a thing of the past.

I think I am going to go back to stock as well.. LOL @ ME just upgrading everything and NOW switching it all back over... It flies GREAT stock as well as with ailerons. I just think it would be fun to have 2 planes instead of 1. Now I gotta find the stock rx.. lol
