Here it is, the finished product, in the air: thesmithfam.org/blog/2007/03/03/super-cub-aileron-upgrade-part-3/The verdict: The cub flies beautifully with ailerons. I can't think of a better aileron training platform. My apologies for the crappy video. Stay tuned on Monday, and I'll post a much better one when I have access to a better camera.

I will try to get a better video today or tomorrow. I am going to fly in a BIG field today.....something I have never done before. I am going to put the 5in1 on it too. Hopefully I get 2 video's at once. We'll see how good she does today (she being the little woman, not the cub) on the video camera. Usually I try some slow flyby's and she usually ducks or moves out of the way missing the whole shot...lol.

I'm new to flying and got a cub. I love the idea of ailerons but I am not sure exactly how the controls work. I broke the throttle on the stock radio and am looking at the DX6 radio w/ AR6000 receiver. Will this work with ailerons? If you have the ailerons rigged, can they be used as flap's to assist in lanndings? I love this hobby and am amazed at how fast the money dissappears! Thanks to all.

crashandburn, I had done the aileron mod on my cub, and I was using the DX6/AR6000 receiver. It works great with ailerons. The DX6 manual clearly describes how to set up your ailerons as 'flaperons'. It's a snap, no-brainer to do. When you cut your ailerons, cut them as deep as possible ... I think mine ended up being about 1.75" deep. I also made them about 16" long. They are hinged with 3M blenderm hinge tape. I started about 4" out from the wing root, and stopped just before the wings curve at the tips. I had done it once before with smaller ailerons, and there was just no authority. You can see some pics of my bird here: supercubclub.proboards78.com/index.cgi?board=pics&action=display&thread=1179094658

That is awesome! I just laid down $200 today for the DX 6 and I forgot the doggone speed controller for the motor. I hope my shop is open tomorrow (Memorial Day). I will take my time and install everything right. I read on this sight that the plane responds much better with these servos but you are right, I will need to get used to the rudder on the left stick! Next job will be ailerons. I can't wait. Nice paint, by the way, that will come after structural upgrades.

I just realized I never gave the dimension for the aileron mod. I made mine like this. They start 5 1/4 inches from the fuse, they are 15 inches long and 2 inches wide.

Here is another pic of the tailing edge of wing and leading edge of aileron. It is god to cut the leading edge of aileron at a 45 degree angle. This will allow for proper movement for the aileron.

Very cool...I will attempt the cut and hinges tonight. I will let you all know how it turns out. Thanks for all of the nice photos and advice.

No problem. Keep us in pics if you can. I would like to compile a bunch of people's different aileron mods. They are all unique in one way or another. Kepp the nose up! Kevin

Next question... I bought servo wire extensions to run the length of the wing and thought I was all set but when I looked at my Spektrum DX6 it only had one spot for the ailerons. Do I need to buy a junction that combines the two servo wires into one or is there a way to rig the DX6 to use another spot for the other aileron?

I am not totally familiar with the dx6 but I know that you can use a Y-harness to combine both servo's to one channel. I use 1&6 on my futaba so I can use them as flapperons too. Check the manual for flaperon feature and see what channels it tells you to use for seperate plug ins. Kevin

All I had to do was look at what Sassy Dave had posted and I wouldn't have had to ask that question. With the seperate servo's you get flaps as well. That is AWESOME. The biggest problem I have is landing (go figure) so the slower the speed, the less damage I can cause to my neighbors car. Thanks guys....

I would not use them as flaps just yet. Get used to the ailerons first....for a while. When you do use the flaps.....do it way up high at first. Once you see how you plane reacts then try messing with them closer to earth. Peace
