Hello Ed , have you managed to get much flying in lately, the weather over here has been up and down like a yo-yo . i did manage to get a flight in the other day with a stinson reliant that i got from sussex model centre for £39 .They stopped making these about 5yrs ago, a nice looking bird ,with a weird gull wing ,and a vicious tip stall . I dont know how they keep popping up ,this is the second one i have bought secondhand. Also i bought a hubsan h122d storm racing quad, comes with a "Dustbin" fpv goggle set up that you put the monitor in . I tried it once, but i just cannot get used to not seeing any part of the craft in front of me. How did you get used to flying with your fpv set up , any tips would be appreciated ,is it worth angling the camera down a bit while i am learning ,this is way different from the 501s ,fast for what it is even with brushed motors .hope you are keeping well Chris

Hey Chris
Not much flying here...has been so hot and humid ( can't stand it ) so being out in the sun is almost unbearable even the evenings are hot . have been dealing with sinus issues, leaves me a little dizzy at times as well. so really just doing a lot of nothing....lol
I have been using the LAANC system to get authorization to fly even for these tiny quads It works pretty well it has some issues at times and some of the companies that are putting it out ask some silly questions and do not seem to understand even what the rules are.
Now I have received an e-mail showing that the FAA is asking businesses in the drone industry to give them ideas as to what to ask on a upcoming test for hobbyists . They are not even asking those who are hobbyists when people took the commercial Part 107 test here to fly commercial drones most questions never related to the drone flying at all, it was about weather and sectional charts and all the things manned aircraft pilots needed to know and I assume that is what most of the questions on this recreational hobbyist test will be made up of as well.
So stupid to seek information from companies that desire to drive hobbyists out of the air....the FAA does not get it at all
Have flown these tiny quads a little. Had bought a new one and it has issues, sent it back to the hobby shop and they can not get it to do anything . When I was flying it the image was distorted and the DVR footage blacks out made a video of it showing I went through every channel on the VTX and it did the same thing on every Frequency/Channel
So when they got it they flew it and DVR is clear and no distortion...BUT my other two quads I have are clear as a bell so has to be something...anyway that is where i am at the moment...very little flying and just trying to get things sorted.
Well when I first tried FPV I used these little whoop style quads....they flew slow and I can see the prop guards and that gives me a sense of setting in side while flying and seeing enough of those guards to Judge where I was related to everything...same goes with when I mount a camera on the Top of the wing on these little UMX planes I can see the nose and prop of the plane and can judge the distance like when I fly down through the grass to how close I am to it....most of it becomes muscle memory and then becomes pretty easy
I think that Hubsan is set up in a way you do not see any prop movement..now that is hard to get use to not seeing something in the camera...You could potentially place a small carbon rod - a toothpick whatever out the front so you can judge where you are in relation to everything....just being able to see anything would give you the ability to judge where you are.
that is how I got use to it...I would guess If i was flying something that I could not see, I would have difficult as well You see my vids there is always something be it prop guards on quads Or the nose/prop on my plane that you can see, that is what I see while flying , makes it easier .
I saw awhile back they had bought back the Stinson Reliant for a short time at Horizon hobby and I almost purchased one back then but I feared my rough grass field and carpet would not do well with it and I also read i had some tip stall issues So I passed...is a beautiful unique aircraft for sure .
doing pretty well...but not flying much..
Great hearing from you
Ed.

Hello Ed ,i think you are with me on this with the having some focal point to fix on to .I read somewhere that a person had a beautifully set up b24 liberator ,with an fpv cam in the nose cone with no vision of the plane at all ,what is the earthly point of that.I am still in airplane mode on that ,i like to see a classy airframe in the air. Anyway what is driving my interest in the fpv is this, after all this time i have found a friendly flying club ,about 15mls away on an old RAF bomber field.I still fly down the football field as well ,more in the evenings when there is not so much time ,but the thing is the lads down the club are flying these megga fast 4s racing jobs, through the hoops and all through some abandoned chicken sheds ,round the uprights and rafters ,through a window at the end into the light ,blinded for a second through the window of the next shed all round that one then back again. One of them lent me his goggles for a minute ,so i could see and blimey these lads are good. So i was the only one flying a "Plank" ,actually my wots wot biplane ,they had all stopped flying as quads and planes dont mix at the same time,so i had them all sat on the chairs watching me,one of them said "No pressure but we are all waiting for the show" ,all light hearted but pressure all the same ,well the wot didn't let me down ,i gave it a spirited take off into a vertical ,rolling all the way up with a stall turn at the top ,and a six turn spin on the way down. Now the thing is ,the grass runway is nice and long with a crop growing all around it , with being a new flying site for me i just couldn't get my bearings in ,three times i landed in the corn field on approach . It was only when i put up my blaze glider that i was able to redeem myself and actually land on the runway ,at least i provided the spectators with some amusement. The main reason i joined the club is because there is no committee ,so none of this oh you have to pass some test before you can fly nonsense ,just fly safe and you are all right ,hopefully i will be protected in future for my flying , i know after all i have said about clubs in the past ,i have sold out and gone over to the dark side ,but hell i want to be able to fly a 4s craft about the size of my hand ,through a window flat out omg i can hear the shattered wood and bits of quad from here all the best Chris

Blimey, you went dark pretty fast... Nothing wrong with clubs where people are friendly and out to have fun One close to me is in a Garbage Dump and behind locked gates no phone number, no email address and only a facebook page you have to join to contact them and it is in line with the runway at the local airport and altitude is limited to 200 feet AGL geesh I can fly at the unique up to 400 feet AGL if need be.... glad to hear they let you fly and allowed you to enjoy their flight...now that is where you will excel once someone who really knows what they are doing teaches you, you will fly FPV faster and better me I am still learning.... wait until you get good enough with the FPV to fly those planks under the goggles that is my goal...I want the cam on my Sportsman and cruise over the unique at about 250-300 feet and see all around like I am setting in it....that is my hope But until then I will fly these small micro quads around the yard and the unique long range FPV flying is also something i want to do one day....people beware the Buzzard is coming..... great to hear you have found a place to fly without all the mess.... Ed.

Hello Ed , well its like this , i took the x4 storm down the club ,it was a bit windy anyway after no more than 30 seconds, the quad lives in the cornfield ,so like a moth around a light bulb i have another one arriving tomorrow ,it was fine for a few secs ,then i got cocky and punched it up and the wind got it .When i joined the club i told the lads i've been flying for 15yrs, sheesh they have some hot shots flying there ,it will help me raise my game hopefully . I have been flying just for my own amusement for so long that i think i have picked up some bad habits ,it will be difficult trying to impress this crowd ,but there are some other newer people as well so we are in the same boat ,and its all good natured anyway. Now if i could only find a mix switch on the transmitter so that i could slave my enthusiasm for flying ,with my actual skill ,get in a tight spot then flick the switch and fly like a god ,if only . I hope you get some flying in my friend . Chris

always something with this hobby...sometimes I think these quads/planes are like shelter animals, you get them , feed them , and then they run away looking for the original home or something... well sent one quad back t Grayson hobby because no matter what i did the DVR was mostly black screen and had some distortion while flying in the goggles, used every frequency and channel and both sets of Goggles still did the same thing They got it and works great for them and even sent me a vid showing it was clear and DVR was nice...so they are sending it back and the older Et125 I have after flying t one day I took canopy off to clean it and somehow a couple VTX wires cane loose so to solder them had to remove the flight board stack and after putting it back together it simply will not arm at all Everything works like it should just will not arm. After many videos and dozens of things they said to do, still will not arm So this morning i sent it off to Grayson hobby to see if they can sort that one out...always something I just need to get better at figuring out what all the tech stuff is and be able to perhaps repair and or build my own quad so when something happens I can fix it or rebuild it.... weather here has been so hot and humid, hard to go outside and do anything suppose to have some weather change over the weekend hopefully it will move all this humidity out and cool down enough to be able to stand it . not much flying just a tad once in awhile...have not flown my large planes in such a long time, will have to go over them with a fine tooth comb as they say to ensure they do not fall apart when I try to fly them.. hope to get a few flights in before winter I hope...LOL Keep flying Ed

Hello Ed ,how are you keeping these days ,any flying going on . Well the weather is a changing ,nights drawing in and dark in the mornings, at least its a bit cooler so at least we can breathe . Well its like this ,i picked up my last plane for this year ,probably i bought it secondhand from an Irishman who claimed to have been flying 30yrs .The plane is a dynam ,no surprise there its a catalina. Now anyone with a brain would leave a receiver in the plane to demonstrate it to the buyer, then either negotiate with the buyer to see if he wants it left in or not. This fella with the 30yrs experience must have taken it out a while ago ,anyway he plugs the motors in to god knows where and it sparks up, i mean if you look at a catalina ,two props in-board of the fuse with barely a hands width of clearance ,right above the batty box ,well it actually took off from this long table in his shed ,it caught him on the elbow with one prop so he got out of the way ,then i continued its flight towards my nose ,i managed to put my hands out and catch the front of the" cat" ,but it span round and caught me on the wrist ,so fair enough it was working sure enough ,by this time the clown had found his transmitter and put the throttle down .There was no damage to the plane so it did come home with me ,but wouldn't you know it when i plugged my own receiver in a couple of days later ,the offending motor that zapped both of us refused to work " src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/superangry.png"> so the plane i got at half price has immediately become a money pit .Oh well ,but it does look beautiful ,the wingspan doesn't tell the whole story its huge ,if i ever get hold of some matched motors i might actually get it flying and on film Chris

Hey Chris , weather here has been HOT...92 degrees yesterday and 90 today.....hot and humidity unbearable and no rain in awhile... have not flown any planes at all, in fact went and checked my batts and reset store charge on them all for winter already ....have only kept the quad batts charged and ready have flown them some here are a couple vids www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQHEwQ4wbHEwww.youtube.com/watch?v=3btKvbhcYpkhate to hear about that incident, could have been really bad for both of you some folks and their expertise is at the end of their tongue.... that guy must have that problem... it's the same all the time you get something and have to spend dollars to get it right The one New Quad I got I can not get any Goggle DVR footage it is always black or video comes and goes ( why i am using the Key Cam on it )...sent it back to the Hobby shop they checked it and could find no issue and even made a video of them flying it showing it was clear ...so must be something in my cheap goggles I guess they sent it back and I am flying it and using a key cam for footage. Then one of my older ones decided not to arm anymore, so I sent them that one to check out and the gyro and Flight board is bad So they will replace that and check it out and send it back when done.... always something....hope the weather cools here soon can not stand to be outside I am sure you will get that Catalina in the air soon Good to hear from you me just relaxing in the A/c..... Ed

Hello there Ed ,blimey your last post you where relaxing with the ac with the hot temperatures we have none of those problems now been wet and windy for weeks over here.i did get the "cat" in the air off the grass ,with the twin motors she fairly leapt off the ground ,should be good off the pond ,i didn't. get any vid of it .On the second flight the canopy came up and the" twins " ripped it to shreds, so ordered a new canopy ,this comes in two pieces the blue top half is in stock but you cant get the blue lower half ,only the grey version oh well at least it will be visible .I hope cat is not going to be a money pit it looks great in the air. so have you mothballed your fleet or are you expecting last chance or two before the winter sets in. all the best Chris

I think sometimes the heat and cold and changes warp some of this foam...can't see it but a few times I did get to fly some of them acted strange in the air...not sure what it was O well tape and glue will fix most anything... still just setting around....doing little...that time of year one just feels worn out and blah... I am waiting for the crisp cold days ,when the weather stabilizes and you get the blue skies ,just wrap up dash out and fly whilst you can still feel your fingers . Of course the winters over here are not so dramatic as far as snow ,just perishing cold, but sometimes i think i have flown more in the winter, mostly first thing in the morning before the dog walkers are about or just before sunset, good time for the night radian "The flying lightbulb".Yes i've done it ,ordered another one ,it broke my heart losing my one earlier in the year ,hopefully when it arrives i shall have a better result and some video .I hope you are keeping well in yourself .Chris

But it has started cooling down, we still need some rain, the ground is drier than burnt toast... I suspect we might see some big snows, we are due for a few, we have not had that many big ones the past few years. batteries do not like the cold....nor do my bones... but maybe the only time I get to fly.... I find things harder and harder to do year after year , that's frustrating... O well , it is what it is I need some new FPV goggles these are not as good as they were saving some dollars for the spring...will just relax and wait for it. Hope all is well there Ed.

11/12/2019 Hey Chris , have not flown since back in September . Have done other things preparing for winter
I just store charged all my batteries and put things away for the winter
Had to go and take up my carpeted runway or I should say what was left of it Appears the wild critters continued to rip it up and the wind helped throwing it around
So I took it up and put it in the rubbish . Will have to find something else for a runway come spring . I see some heavy duty landscape fabric that appears may work, will look into it further
Got our first snow today, not much but it sure has gotten cold fast . So would not be flying anyway
Hope you have gotten some in before the weather steals it away.
Just thought I would update ya a little
Hope all is well
Ed.

Hello there Ed , i dont like the sound of the white stuff floating around ,mind you i have the catalina and the super ez float planes so a couple of snow days would work ,past that it gets a pain. The weather over here has been unpredictable to say the least ,with serious flooding in places ,but where i am we have the cold crisp days with no wind ,so you have to stick your head through the curtains and make a judgement on the day ,cant always trust the forecast . The catalina still has cannibalistic tendencies ,its eaten two canopies now ,i think prior to me buying it ,the wing mount was damaged and repaired ,so that on landing if you catch a wing float ,the wing bends around enough for the props to catch the canopy. Of course the idea is to land nice and straight in the first place .How are things with you my friend
