Hi Everyone, I have returned.. after a long break from flying r/c I decided it would be good fun to get the super cub out again. After sorting the wing struts, new servo's, better radio gear and a new ESC it is now time to do the batteries.
I am currently using the old hobbyzone 8.4v NiMh batteries, I'd like to upgrade to Lipo, and I am just curious of what other people on the forum are using.
I have two 1200 mAh 7.4v LiPo's from old Helis that I have owned, would they be any good or would I be better off buying some 11.1v batteries?
Many thanks, Steve

My many battery question posts
I have been using the 3S 11.1v 1300mAh batteries seem to do well about 10-12 minute flight times ( when not having battery issues of late, my times have been reduced )
I believe others are using larger batteries.

If you've kept the stock motor but changed the ESC and RX, AND the ESC will run fine on 2S you can certainly try them, WITH the stock 10x8 (fat black) prop. It should do OK if the batteries aren't crap. It won't do a lot better, mostly similar.
If you want more performance you get the 3S AND prop down, or burn up the motor or ESC depending on which is the weak link.
Note- you could have kept ALL the old stuff and just used the 2S, AS LONG AS YOU WERE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER DISCHARGE THE BATTERIES!! The old ESC would not catch LVC and could trash the lipos.

Ok, Thanks hghost and flydiver. I've fitted my cub with two types of battery connectors, so im going to take the LiPo's and the NiMh batteries out flying with me. I am using a 50amp ESC with the stock motor and an APC 9X6E if that affects anything.
Cheers.

The APC 9X6E will be inadequate for those batteries. Odd as it may sound for lower voltage you want MORE prop, less prop for more voltage. Electric motor will always try to turn according to the voltage. More voltage > faster spin....so, you have to have a smaller prop to reduce the amp load. Use the stock 10x8 or something equivalent (fat) for 8.4v. Save the APC 9X6E for 3S lipo. Read this a few times until it starts to make some sense: supercubclub.proboards.com/thread/4624supercubclub.proboards.com/thread/1831?page=1

Thanks for the tips flydiver. Thats a great article you linked me to. Full of info . Sadly my 10x8 prop is broken so i am going to have to stick with the 9x6 for now. Im definitely going to convert to lipo. Will an 11.1v lipo be fine with the stock motor, i mean not too high a voltage or anything??? Im just curious about 11.1v going into the stock motor, surley its designed for 8.4v Thanks. Steve

The stock LP cub is 11.1V and uses the same hardware as the older nimh version. The only difference is the battery.
It will be fine.

Thanks Flydiver, more great information!!!. I'll probably go down fhe route of buying some 3S lipo batteries. Once the new flysky arrives i'll put a video of the cub flying in the forum.

Update on the situation.... My cub has now been fitted with a flysky 6ch receiver, 30amp turnigy brushed esc, a 3S 2200mah lipo and the 9x6e apc prop and all still using the stock motor. I did have a 50amp esc in the cub but that has now been removed for use with another project! Pictures to follow soon - either of a pretty cub, or a dead and battered one!!! Steve

That should work fine if the pilot it up to it.
