I came up with this idea about three months ago and will not go back to the stock gearbox. This was a shot in the arm for the SC, a bit lipo like. On the first flight I had some serous problems that arose and fast. This power plant was setup on the float SC first as a test bed in case things went bad. I was running up the throttle for take off and the tork kicked in and roll her to the left and nosed her in like a pZ Stang. I then tried the low power and then slowly increase to full and it took off and flew at full throttle. I then lost control of the plane due to the crash that knocked loose the stock servos at the first try. The problem was fixed but, I noticed a ripped rudder that could have made thing bad. After the Float SC drama, I just stuck the gearbox, out of frustration on the Grasshopper and then off she went. It leaped off the ground around four feet Shocked, I over corrected and shredded the GWS 10X8 prop. I then stuck my second to last prop on that happen to be a e-flite 10X8e that did poorly on the Amp Aviator test. I knew this prop would take a beating and launch by hand. It quickly climbed at a steep angle and showed slight left turn in level flight due to tork. This can be trimmed out completely and it's nice to have power when you need it. I then did some aerobatics and it was able to do some light gyro tumbles. I will have to get my old lady to film this. I was also able to do a inverted hover with the nose slightly up. I Still have some more flying to do but, I will let you guys know. PZ's gearbox on the left, SC's on the right! The gears look the same to me. image.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/280476/Nl28953.jpgimage.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/280476/To45691.jpg

It turns out that the Pz motor is bigger then the Hz motor. I called HH and the tech said so. But, they seem as though there the same seize. Mybe the PZ has more wounds/turns, that give it more power.

Very strange. They are also the same price..

I talked to another tech that seemed clueless and then summed it up to, these are $10 480 motors that are made for the curtain type of aircraft to there specs. We have no idea how may rpm's these motors turn. Just get a pz 480 and put it in your gearbox and plug it up. I will try to get Joe with Amp Aviator to run a test for us.

Well I have no idea if I got a Parkzone motor or not but awhile back I ordered a new motor for a spare. I ordered it off the Supercub parts listing at horizon. The one I ordered is different from mine. It looks identical except the writing on it is different and a lot smaller and the copper bushing on the back of the motor by the wire leads is 3 times bigger. I haven't had a chance to try it out but I'm thinking I'll get a speed boost just because I broke it in under water and my original one is about shot. Here is a picture of the two motors. Mine is on the left and the one I ordered is on the right. Bigtone does your parkzone motor have a different sized bushing in the back? Todd

Hobbyzone probably buys motors to spec from various vendors. You got a variant on the stock, but hopefully it will have as good or better specs than stock.
How often do you guys clean your motors? I clean mine every time I take it off with motor spray cleaner and then relubricate the bushings.

it never hurts to clean them often. There is always brush fragments all over after each run but I wouldn't clean after every run. I would do it as often as 5-7 flights to stay on top of it good. Make sure to use comm drops as part of your regular maintainance. Kevin

In the RC car world comm drops get mixed reviews. I cut my comms regularily but don't use comm drops. I may have to pick some up and try it.

Hey swampfox201, that motor on the right looks like another brand. That maybe the E-flite 480 (P-47), both PZ and HZ 480 look about the same. The only thing is the item number on the motor can. The HZ 480 comes with metal gear and the PZ comes with the plastic one and no trans caps solider on the wires. I spun the PZ gear and the replacement gears are metal like the HZ 480's.

All the HZ replacement motors have metal pinions. I have one of the first SC's and it had a plastic gear. I believe they all come with metal gears now. The plastic gears were heating up and softening and coming off (I had this happen). I could be wrong but the lhs said they were not coming with plastic any longer (that was 6 months ago).

The stock motor on mine is the same as your replacement swampfox201. Have a replacement on order, will let you know which one I get.

I bought a new motor at my LHS. They had 4 in stock. 2 were the original bushing, 2 were the new bushing.
I bought one of the new ones. I broke it in under water at 3 volts for 5 minutes.
Other than it is a new motor, and therefore runs better, I haven't noticed a big difference in performance from when my other motor was new.

I bought a PZ replacement and a E-Flight from horizon, thinking I would see if I noticed any difference from my HZ motor (which has over 100 flights on it now so isn't really an apples to apples comparison, but then I haven't noticed much of a drop off in performance either). Anyway, the PZ (PKZ1534) has the smaller bushing and the plastic/nylon gear. The Eflight has a metal gear (wrong teeth count, easy to replace) and the larger bushing. Neither of them have the "104" marked component (I am assuming this is a capacitor??) soldered to the wire leads. Anyone have any idea why they wouldn't, and would it be advisable to add them?
