Whilst SWMBO was watching the "Strictly" stuff last night, thought I'd have a go at starting my Mods to my Cub. Strengthened the wing saddle with a lolly stick, Put new 2 1/2" wheels on and did away with the rubber bands on the U/C. Drilled more holes, bound together with thread and superglued them. Also trimmed the covers so they don't foul the wheels. Ok, thinking about the Solarfilm covering. encountered the first problem straight away trying to remove the main wing pegs for the rubber bands. Gave up trying basically, laterally thinking that spray painting would be easier. So, Uk members, what prep' and type of cans are you all recommending? Motorbike and car stuff I've done in the past usually starts with a quick wet and dry 800, Upol etch primer flash over and lots of thin coats top coat. What works with these foamies? I was also thinking how about clear Cellotape before or after said paintwork? I'm pretty determined to try and add a little strength to the leading edge of the Main wing in particular, and maybe more down the fuselage? Brand names please for your paint types would be a great advantage. Thank you.

I have used Rust-Oleum 2 Ultra Touch and Krylon Fusion, both products bought at my local WalMart. I would do some personal testing on an area which does not show or a broken piece of fuselage instead of just taking someone's word for it though. I don't recall which worked best as it has been a long time back since I did any painting on my SC and I did some on my Bixlers, too. I may have them confused as to what paint worked one each the best. Not sure if either of these paints are available in your area or not. My best suggestion is as I had said. Get a broken piece of foam and shoot some paint onto it to see how it reacts before you run out and apply it to the SC and ruin the foam. There is a section on the home page here for Paint, but not sure it they archived everything or not from the past. Good luck on it.

I had excellent results earlier this year with PlastiKote Enamel when refurbing my Ariel leader. I have some left in the garage to try on a scrap piece of packing foam. Might need a sealer coat of stabilizing primer first? Keep you posted.

Never painted an entire plane but little bottles of tester Dulux acrylic from B&Q are good for touching up or even bigger bits. For wing edge protection Sellotape is rather thin, use instead clear packing tape Scotch is the brand I got from ASDA but I expect it's available elsewhere.

Well the Plasikote wouldn't work I'm afraid! The Acrylic Emulsion might work? I've no airbrush tho? May look down the model shop, see what they have. Realize what you mean about the packing tape, had a 50mm roll here ready. So, now do I paint first then paint, or vice versa?

Yep! my thoughts too! Another idea? Anyone tried Zinnzers Bullseye primer? may be a wipe over with a sugarsoap solution first? Keep you posted.

If you move your tape in the least after painting, expect it to lift the paint right off the foam. I thas been too longa ago for me to recall, but I believe I did the opposite, myself. I see that Gorilla Tape now has a clear tape, but I have not heard anyone speak of using it on an RC plane, yet. Good luck on what you choose to do. Let us know how it turned out. The Testors paint supposedly works, but it is too costly to do a whole plane with in my opinion. I used Plasticote or plastidip on the wing tips of my plane. You can see the texture in the third photo. It didn't cause any real problems when applied, but it does add some weight and will peel off if you crash or mishandle it. It didn't touch up smoothly in such cases, so you really need to remove it all if your going to shoot more on after a crash or such. In addition, when you use tape to keep the plasticote from overspraying, be careful in removal of the painter's tape, as it can stick to the plasticoat at the edge and peel it right back.

Evenin' Coupe. Nice Beemer you got there, and is that your pilot in the 3rd shot? I've carried out some trials on some scrap foam. Using Zinnzers Bullseye brushed on after a sugarsoap wash and rinse, that dried and no visual damage to foam. After drying I put some Frog tape as if to create a mask, then sprayed Plasti-kote several light coats and surface remained wrinkle free. I think? this may be satisfactory. Might try a waterbased varnish on it and see how that turns out. Really surprising how many different methods there are on the web, mainly Youtube, for covering/ painting these foamies. Last I watched was a chap covering with masking paper with a pva paste as the fixer. Think all thoughts now on this subject will be closed for the Christmas break, may get a chance to try a complete cover/paint/varnish on another scrap piece during, will have to see how time goes. Still not Maidened the Cub, not the weather here in Cornwall for my first flight.

I may be wrong but beginning to sound like you're adding quite a bit of weight.

Don't think so Knack' Think I'll just remove decals, and apply my own "livery" just to put my mark on it. Been thinking too far ahead of myself really. Just want a decent wind free day to get her up in the air!

I think we're all waiting for that... ? I've had to dust the planes twice since their last flight.

Only downside is of course, the grounds harder! Safe flying.
