I have just bought an older Super Cub S with ACT. Hearing all the bad stuff about ACT, I'm wondering what experiences you have had replacing ACT with SAFE. I am a complete beginner with planes, but I can keep a fixed pitch single rotor heli aloft without much trouble. I don't want to do the club route...want to do this on my own. Any advice is appreciated.

Guess this is where I come into the fray....lol
The Older Super Cub with Act is a great plane....easy way as Sham and Sailor and Fly said simply unhook the ACT sensors...the SC flies great as is.( DO NOT FLY WITHOUT UNHOOKING THE ACT ) !!!!
BUT...to someone new who finds this fairly large beginner plane intimidating and is wondering about SAFE Technology and it's advantages over the old ACT
here you go
supercubclub.proboards.com/thread/5552/super-cub-rtf-safe-dsmACT=Anti-Crash Technology...which everyone quickly learned actually turned out to be actual CRASH Technology..simply because it failed to work as designed.
The sensors were suppose to read the sky and ground to keep the plane flying and understanding which was which....reality turned out the sensors could not
distinguish which was sky and which was ground, thus the plane would crash thinking the ground was sky and the sky was ground...and nothing anyone could do
would help it understand...thus Unhooking it was the SAFE way of flying this plane.
The SC does great as is as many have stated...it flies very well and it's size and weight can be intimidating and it feels heavy in the sky.....Horizon Hobby
as it knows the SC is a virtual learning flying tank, does very well and can take allot of punishment.
SO HH cane out with SAFE Technology = Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope Technology....they introduced this Tech in the Apprentice which has the capability to
limit Control surfaces so Novices would not Over Control the plane, plus adding a Panic Button that would bring the plane back to level flight with holding
a switch, in case you find yourself in trouble. It also has AS3X Technology that allows subtle control surface movements to keep the plane level in windy
conditions it is a built in gyro set up ( somewhat like your Heli's )
Now the original RX in the SC has the ESC-RX as one unit...it is in a case...the SAFE RX found in the New Super Cub S version is a circuit board and no it will not fit
in the older RX case.
Now what it will do...YES you can put the new SAFE Rx in the older Super Cub...Yes it works great and all it takes is simply unplugging the motors wires and plugging
them into the new RX.....
The issue is mounting...the SAFE Rx has to be still and tight....the plane will fluctuate if it is not mounted tightly.
I mounted mine in the exact same spot as the older one. I used velcro and a wire tie to mount it.
The SAFE Rx allows you to use Three modes of operation
Beginners mode which allows very limited control surface movement, but also requires a very large area to turn in and it has self leveling when you let go of the sticks.
Intermediate Mode, allows more control surface movement and you can turn in a smaller area, but still has enough limit so you will not over control the plane. No self leveling.
Experience Mode, takes all limits off, has no self leveling it is basically flying as is.
It also has a panic Mode that when you hold the switch the plane will level itself out from any orientation...if you find yourself in trouble. and that works in every Mode
Advantages of the SAFE are many...plus it has AS3X stabilization which allows one to be able to fly in more wind than normal and all of those modes can be switched at any
moment for whatever you need .
Make no mistake the Super Cub flies great as is. It really does not need SAFE even for the beginner , BUT, the SAFE has advantages that will allow everyone to use it's
many Modes and its stabilization to make the SC even more enjoyable and even easier to fly.
I am using also the SAFE RX from an Apprentice in other planes which allows one to fly planes they normally would not be able to so easy.
HH came out with the SAFE Corsair, allowing beginners to fly a war-bird...I also, in the near future will be getting that Corsairs SAFE Rx and use it in other planes
You can read about all the E Flite SAFE RX and those using it in multiple planes on the RC Groups forum
www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2135213also about the E Flite SAFE Corsair
www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2197924The SAFE RX for the S Version Super Cub DSMX SAFEĀ® Receiver/ESC Unit: Super Cub Part Number (SPMA3170) is $55.99 .
Worth every penny in my book
I enjoy stress free easy low level slow flight...the Super Cub does all that in Both versions the older one and the New S version one....the advantages with the SAFE ( S )
gives you stabilization and flight surface limits and a panic mode when needed . Some would not consider it much , but if they flew the SC both ways
they would understand the Great advantages the SAFE gives both to a Novice and the expert.
The SAFE Technology is by far the best Tech, that has come out in a long time. It can be used across a wide array of planes ...and can be moved from one to another .
Now with the Spektrum SAFE AR636 and they even have a normal AR636 programmable Receiver that has AS3X stabilization that will allow gains to be set in the Rx, by PC, or smart phone
I just installed a SAFE RX in a ParkZone Archer...yet to be flown, but if it works well which i assume it will, I will move that SAFE RX into another plane
I hope to install it in a ParkZone SE5a a WW 1 Biplane.
My goal is to install it in a HK Flybeam, so i can fly this much larger Bird in my smaller area and have the SAFE Technology as a safety net so to speak, in the dark if and when needed.
SAFE Technology can and will help everyone. The Pro's of the SAFE allows one to fly planes they would either not normally be able to fly and or help them learn faster to fly them
on a as is basis.
the SAFE does not take away learning to fly, it adds the ability to learn to fly faster and easier.
The issue you see and may read is using SAFE is not flying or learning, if you read the threads I gave you , you will read such nonsense on some posts.
Use to be older Balsa plane pilots said those who flew foam planes are not real flying...any thing that helps you fly is not learning etc etc etc....
SAFE DOES NOT fly the plane....it is still the Pilot 100% flying the plane....the only thing SAFE does is place limitations to not OVER Fly the plane and allow
one to grow with the process to LEARN to fly .
With so many clubs being more of social events than flying ones...and with the wait until we allow you to , we have seniority hogwash many are handed in clubs now days
most people tend to learn on their own...SAFE allows that to be done easier . ( not all clubs are like what I mentioned ...but most are and many are getting worse )
You can't go wrong by spending a few extra bucks to get a SAFE Rx...it is a matter of personal desire .
My philosophy is , ANYTHING, that makes flying less stressful and More enjoyable is a PLUS+......
I also have bought a Guardian 2D / 3D stabilizer and as i am trying to learn about it, it can be set up similar to the SAFE Rx...just different
I bought a E Flite SAFE Rx out of an Apprentice now in my Archer...but intend to purchase more, they are expensive far more than the SC one...but again to me worth every penny.
And yes my SC has a SAFE Rx in it . Also intend to use it on a Slow Stick when I get it built .
Hope that helps you some.
