My bipolar personality has raised its ugly head again and since its in-between paydays and I was bored, well you know what happens when I get bored-out comes the knife! I decided to go low wing with FrankCub this time. Only since my earlier interior fuselage reinforcements extended all the way to the rear of the servo compartment did I think this might actually be feasible. Here are the ugly fist stages of surgery; WARNING: The pictures contain graphic footage of massive sawing and cutting and may not be suitable for younger viewers. Here is a shot showing the extent of the internal reinforcements from earlier surgery Here was the difficult major cutout for the wings, still have to trim the forward plywood And just for fun, I think I will use the wing cutout for the cabin roof! With some filling in and sanding of course!

OK, so first round of surgery is over and before the plastic surgery begins to hide the scars, thought I would rig her up for a first flight just to see if I am wasting my time. Here is my landing gear solution: And she is ready for the maiden "flight" hopefully, just letting glue dry well before. Notice the rakish angle of the langing gear, ala FW109 don't you think?

Well, maiden flight went ok, plane back in one piece. Landing gear needs some strengthening, happening as I type. Little nose heavy, but that will be take care of soon enough also. All in all, just more proof that there isn't much this little cub can't take and keep on flying! Going to spend some time in "plastic surgery" so she doesn't scare the local villagers like Franie did when he first made his debut!

I'm constantly impressed by what the SC can be modified into, and it will still fly! Good one!!

Firewall came loose so redoing it and taking off the aluminum extension and mounting motor directly. Should save some nose weight and let me get rid of the tail weights by having motor closer to CG.

Just stick it on with MARMITE! Now that three days of work are over I've started the refurbishment of the Bride of Frankencub. As there there was no Marmite in the pantry, I fell back on old habits and used epoxy. As I said, the motor will now be affixed directly to the firewall with a "X" mount and whatever shimming washers appear needed. Landing gear is getting reinforced also.

CBOR (Crashed Beyond Repair) Took off fine, needed a little more right thrust angle. Next flight wasn't behaving right, throttled back and turned to final. Too little throttle and tip stalled, really banged up and she has been through so much my heart just isn't in trying more repairs. So, new plane as soon as money permits! (had to spend what I had getting my wife and daughter new iPhone 5Cs, where are my priorities??)

Sorry to hear about your situation, but give it a little rest and one can never tell if the phoenix will rise from the ashes once again and your creative juices begin to flow in making the repairs. You may take a look at the plans shown on this page from w5kfg. Looks somewhat similar to what you were doing and may help in any rebuild. Plans are in post that is about a quarter way down the page. Never say never. Good luck with it. Maybe sticking the parts into a spare fuselage or selling them off to go toward another Super Cub are options, too. I find it usually takes a bit of a break to get reset to tackle such problems once again, myself. Good luck in what you decide to do. link

Sincere commiserations. Such a brave concept deserved a better end.
