I crashed it. It wasn't pretty. I'm not sure what sent her in a spiral but she spiraled all the way to the ground and hit hard grass nose first. Had that been actual size it would have evaporated along with everyone/thing in it. It was windy out but not any worse than I had flown before. One of the velcro wing struts was off. I don't know if that was before or after touchdown. I no longer velcro my wing struts. Damage: Prop, cowling, motor shaft, motor mount, Fuselage split in half between the saddle mod and the battery box. A torn rear wing assembly. Everything else looks good. Rebuilding: New fuse, new motor - Park 480/ESC - Thunderbird 54, new motor mount (the one suggested by Flydiver), carbon fiber rod for wing with small tube to keep wing shape. Between parts, glue, paint and such...bout the price of a new cub, maybe a tad less. All other parts I already have. I now have a reason to paint my new floats after the first explosion. Pretty much I'm sticking with the same paint scheme except for the Aces High logo. I may redesign one. I was thinking about something more personal from home. Something from Virginia. Maybe "Sweet Virginia Breeze". IDK...we'll see. I'm aiming to have everything transplanted, painted and assembled by Sunday. The motor should be here today. The worst part other than spending all of my "allowance" was having to scoop up my cub with a broken back in front of a large softball game audience.

Awwww man that' s a shame. She was a good looking Cub. I like the idea of something VA related. Put a peanut on there somewhere. LOL

Wow man, that sucks. I know how I'd feel if I put that much work into a plane and it crashed.
From the sounds of things, at least it won't keep you grounded too long. Have you considered using an iron on covering on your next plane to make it stronger?

Have you considered using an iron on covering on your next plane to make it stronger? I haven't considered it enough. I don't have any experience with coverings other than paint. I have a spare wing from my "rising sun" look. That may be a good test platform to see how it goes. After I get the cub back in the air, I may give that a shot.

I'm just about to start covering mine, almost finished the navlights. I'm still waiting on the servos so I can mount them in the wing and cover that, but until then I guess I can still do the fuselage.
I'll be using profilm (aka ultracoat) to cover the whole plane in black, and I have some yellow stick on solartrim to go over that.

I wouldn't mount the servos then cover them as you may have to get them out at a later date if one fails. If you decide to glue them in the wing, wrap them in insulation tape first. This will make it easier to remove them if/when necessary.

I just covered the Boomer Sooner Cub back-up with UltraCote... That SUCKED! It took FOREVER (~7hrs of work), and to be honest, I like the look of the painted one better still (which only took around 1hr to paint).... I think as long as I have foam planes from here on out, I'm only painting them. I like it that the ultracote makes them a little stronger, but I can re-paint 7 in the time it took me to cover 1... I'll also add it cost me ~$35 for the UltraCote, and I painted the original one with $10 in spray paint...

Yeah, if it's anything like gift wrapping, I suck at it. You can always tell which presents under the Christmas tree came from me, wads of pretty paper taped to %@#$. Like I said, I may entertain the idea down the road and play with my spare wing, but for now she's getting painted.

Ok...rebuild complete. She's all back together sporting a fresh paint job. the only change that I made as far as paint was to the cowling. All of the usual mods; wing saddle, battery box, blah blah blah. Put my $70.00 P.O.S motor that I bought away for a future plane and installed a park 480 brushless with new (propper) motor mount, Castle 54 ESC, 10 x 5E prop, carbon fiber reinforced wing and a partridge in a pear tree.
Climbing for panoramic footage shouldn't be an issue any more.
I'm broke! At least my allowance account is.

Between life and work I can't seem to find time to fly. I have family out visiting, my daughters birthday is tomorrow and she graduates on the 16th. My boat just came out of dry dock and there's a ton of work to be done. I leave for three months in early July. My time is running out!!! I'm off today...it's raining Pics...yes some pics...coming soon.
