Well I am still full of questions, have been researching, and reading my brains out. Doing a lot of window shopping. I love my cub, my lipo setup just got here today!
But I am going to be wanting to upgrade, I like the ease of electric. But I am thinking gas, (not glow/nitro) I have had nitro vehicles and always a headache, tuning, run right, temp etc.. I have a HPI Baja SS 26cc 1/4 scale buggy. I love it, I put in pre mixed gas, pull the starter and have fun, no tuning, no anything. Runs for an hour on a full tank of fuel. Well plane wise how are the "gas" planes? I would love that feature of a plane. Just start her and go, and Regular gas is much cheaper then nitro.
So as you all suspect I am lookign for idea's and suggestion, and plain opinions and thoughts fro you guys who have maybe been where I am now, or have gas planes.
I know they will cost a bit more, money is always a problem, of not having enough, but I can look, dream, and drool. I would assume there are some ok/good planes out there to get into the "gas" flying without spending thousands.
For instance I have been eyeing the greatplanes super sportster. (just an example, I would like something a little smaller)
Thanks! George

most smaller engines are nitro, for one reason they are much simpler. plus there is no ignition system to worry about. also due to the way nitro burns, they can run fairly cool at very high rpm. i dont believe any one is manufacturing any gas engines under 1.80 size which is big. nitro planes arnt as hard to tune as a car motor, well easier then my .46 on my savage but its a pain in the butt to keep tuned. i have a os fl-70 on my cessna and its simple to tune, and runs well.

Tell you what you on the right track. I have gas planes and love em. In fact I may break in my newest one tomorrow. You can't go wrong with gas. It will make your flights much more fun. No hassle of glow box with all the crap needed....don't get me wrong I have the biggest box of that stuff I tote each week too...
I like the fact I can take just my radio and my Ultra Stick 120 lite full of gas and toss it in the back of the truck and go for an hour and blow off some steam. There is nothing else needed for a 45 minute flight...just plane and radio. Try that with electric or glow....oh yeah and awesome sound coupled with smoke if your into it.
Kevin
P.S. I can help ya with plane selection and engine choices as well. Lots of choices now with 26cc engines.

I know what yah mean mrmugen, I love gas, no hassle, radio, and plane, or car, or whatever. I love my baja. She rips! What I am looking for is very complete packages, added Rx, Rx battery, and engine and fly. Something along those lines anyway. Would like it to be friendly flying (do not want to be a top gun pilot to fly it), durable, sporty looking and of course fun.

What ype of plane are you thinking of? Like an Edge or Extra style plane? I top wing, mid wing, or bottom wing? How big do you want to go with this bird? Any preference to engine size?

I have to agree with mrmugen: gas is so much simpler than nitro. Just flip and go flying. I think the super sportster takes a 50cc gas. There are allot out there for not allot of money these days.
Wise choice in my opinion !

Well I have mentioned before Money is my down fall. I got the money, just have to be smart about spending it, so if I can go cheaper, and still be a good plane I am all for that. I am assuming as the wings get lower the plane gets harder to fly? I want bigger but not huge! just looking for something all around, nice, fun, pretty, durable, reliable. Have the power when needed, it will be for sport flying, no crazy 3D. Will loop, and roll, nothing jaw dropping I will be doing. Obviouly the bigger the engine the more money so I need to keep that in mind. Don't have any idea if that helped, LOL

My experience has been that one can go out and roar around with a car/cart/bike in any old vacant lot, and no one will say a word. However, once that machine is in the air, people freak out, call the cops, or just get generally bent out of shape. Even electrics can cause this reaction. I would consider this before you spend the money.
If I want to "blow off some steam", I grab my sloper, an extra battery, and I can go for most of the day. A good sloper is capable of a large envelope of aerobatics, and give some 100mph passes along the slope face. I usually take 2 models, one a sloper, the other a thermaller, and knock myself out with one or the other. It is true that slopes are not everywhere, but it is worth looking around for one. A good sloper can be purchased/built for about the cost of the gas engine...

If you go gas your best bet is either a private field or join your local AMA chartered club. You will not be able to fly a gasser at the park. Of course what you do with it is your business but others may frown and make a stink. Swinging a 20 inch prop is much more dangerous then a 10 inch plastic prop. Do you have a place to fly a gasser?

I can imagine...I live in a remote area as well....d**n near the same as yours. Check out the globe and it's lines.... Glad to hear you have the land to enjoy a plane like a gasser.....helps a lot. So back to plane choices. Have you looked at the USL120? It is very aerobatic and sports a big wing. It can do any maneuver and can fly as slow as you can stand. I have done just about everything with it but it does not like knifeedge flight much.

Actually Hangar 9 discontinued the plane and just started making them again due to large demand by modelers like us. They are only making a limited run of them by the sounds of it. It is well worth the $$ and flies awesome. Here is a link to it. www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN2325Looks like it is not out just yet...worth waiting for. Kevin
