When I was growing up in Michigan it was mostly Blue Gills, Sun Fish, Perch, some small mouth bass. I wasn't much into catfish. We'd go up North to Mullet Lake and catch Walleye. I LOVE eating Walleye. Down here in Texas the only fishing I've down is kayak fishing down on Matagorda. That is pretty fun stuff.. we'd load up in one-man sea kayaks and fish all around... get up into the bays where the freshwater mixes... up in the weeds with the d**n water mocassins trying to get in your kayak with you... getting out and walking on the clam beds.... and it was really cool swimming alone and having a couple dolphins come up and check you out... swim alongside you and stick his eye above the water taking a peep at you. They were pretty fun. I didn't catch much, but we had this wild guy with us that always had a nice haul of reds. I used to work here in Austin with the president of the local fly fishing club. Good guy. I'd say my favorite is stream and lake fishing up in Idaho and Montana, though. Here are some quick ones I grabbed from Montana - deep in Glacier National Park - backpacking fishing. I know, it was a little one.

Nice mess-o-crappie and "good eats" there MrMugen! Unfortunately, I have to admit that I know SB352, and a fisherman he is not.

I've fished Matagorda but only the surf not the bays. In-fact caught my first shark on Matagorda, but since Padre Island National Seashore is a shorter drive I haven't been there (Matagorta) in like 3 years. If your into kayaking I would recommend heading down to Port "A" and yaking the "lighthouse lakes". It's a good paddle for fishing or just sight seeing. BTW have you checked out TKF? www.texaskayakfisherman.com/forum/portal.php A lot of info on kayak fishing. Another good site to check out for fishing in south Texas is AlamoAreaAnglers.net alamoareaanglers.net/ for all types of fishing in S. Texas. ;D

Here is a pic of fishing cats on one of my buddies farm ponds in northern Mississippi. We tok a road trip there in 10/06. What a blast. This fish was one of many (prob 30 or so) that were eaten with traditional southern fixins. What a treat!

When you say "perch" I assume you are referring to "Yellow perch" that is native to the north east regions of the united states. Nuisance species, now that's another story. We call them exotics and have more then you can imagine. White bass are native to this area so are not considered exotic, "yellow perch" have been introduced into Texas so are not native. I have eaten "yellow perch" and "white bass" and find them to be great table fare. So, I guess you could say I will kill ether if I'm lucky enough to catch them. ;D

Here are some quick ones I grabbed from Montana - deep in Glacier National Park - backpacking fishing. I'd like to know the real story behind that picture. ;D Sackohammers, my hats off to you. I can't get the handle on the fly fishing thing, to much like work for me.

Yes indeed mac...yellow perch. The white bass got in our lakes somehow and are eating the crap out of our yellow perch eggs. We kill them all. We never did eat them though. I am not a fan of eating bass.....any of them. I got sicker than a dog once and it ruined bass for me all together. It was when I was younger and I caught it in warm water.....not good!
So your saying the white bass are good eating? Not that I will try them but hey....lol. They got intot he great lakes a while back and are taking over our holes that used to be good for perch......which are real good eating. I would say perch are some of the best eats around.

Hey mac, thanks for the headsup on texaskayak website. I'd only gone with old coworkers and they've since moved on. I've got some of the gear, but no kayak, no knowledge of where to go, and no friends that are interested (well, maybe just one). We had a blast the few times we went. Maybe I can get some friends together and go again. We'd have to rent a trailer and kayaks. Heck, I'd even just paddle around for sightseeing... those lakes you mentioned around port Aransis... is there a place to rent kayaks? Might make a nice weekend trip with the girlfriend.
That shot of me drinking a beer... hehe, that was on Fourth of July last year. I was in the creek at the head of Bowman lake. Right outside of Polebridge, Montana (small hippy town.. no electricity or water service, etc). Its surrounded by Glacier National park. I was about a six pack in when that picture was taken. Didn't catch any fish but man I was really enjoying the view... the weather... the friends, etc. What a time. We also went backpacking into Arrow Lake for fishing a few days before... caught a Ton of trout. Had a couple bear encounters as well... thats always interesting. I'll admit we were looking for them, though... I was with my college buddy who works for the NPS in the park...on the Bear DNA project... so we were collecting bear hair and scat samples.... got some remote camera footage as well. But... thats another story.
