Imagine: Four chaps, each has just finished work for the Christmas period and have the afternoon of Christmas Eve to get together and enjoy their common past-time. One has his new birthday present to maiden, a Phase 3 Fantom, one has his brushless modified SC to maiden, the other two with stock Cubs, more or less.
The Fantom was given the honour of first flight in empty airspace, so three chaps watched in awe and excitement as the bird screamed away from them, only to go inverted after a few seconds and attempt to plough the playing field with it's tail fins and motor mount, which proved not to be strong enough to handle such a task.
(A still image wasn't taken of this however video footage is available and a link to it will be added if it gets to the public domain. )
Next up was the brushless modd'ed SC (mine), first hand launch saw it gain about 20 feet and increase in airspeed before nosediving into the same vicinity as the plough marks. Unperturbed by the broken prop, a new one was fitted and a second hand launch was attempted. This time it climbed a bit higher under more power, a little stick was applied to increase the rate of climb but this only ensured a quick dive toward the parkland. Immediately forward stick was applied which momentarily pulled the bird out of the dive inches from catastrophe and into a vertical climb. At this point the pilot realised the error of his ways in that the elevator was operating in reverse. Too late now as it again crashed back to earth..
The two stock fliers, smirking to themselves with the knowledge that the foolhardy pilots had finished flying for the day, could now enjoy a time of pretend dog-flighting. There were plenty of near misses followed finally by one that was not so much a miss as a hit. Both birds falling from the sky, crippled by the impact....
Look closely, the tail is snapped too!
That's not blood, that's paint off the other one
After all fliers had gathered up the pieces of their various charges, they departed the field, happy in the knowledge that they were on their way to a local hostelry for some sustenance, with something better to do over the holiday period that sit in front of the telly watching repeats for the next few evenings.
Happy New Year and soft landings to all SCC members!
