As suggested by Duck, I've pulled up a stump, grabbed a drink and posting the first real mod I've started. The fibreglass tape does'nt count My new wheels have arrived at last, bit bigger than I thought and quite a bit wider than stock, so much so that the whole of the axle was within the hub. As you can see: I cut a short piece of 4mm brass tubing for each axle, epoxying these. I ran a small groove near the outside edge so that the spring clips I have that are a nice fit won't slip off. Here they are gluing up, you can just about see the groove. The wheels are 76mm ROUNDED SPONGE WHEEL from Modelbatteries.com in the UK, £2.99 a pair. I'll be soldering up Dean's onto all my connectors while the epoxy sets, then I'll post a piccy of the finished fit.

That was one of the first mods I did too. I tried 3-1/2" but ended up going to 3" (76MM) I found on mine i was able to cut the centers of the hub back to fit the stock axles with a small piece of aluminum tube glued in. Then I CA'd the stock nuts on the axle. Made a world of difference.
