I went back to flying my cub more lately. On the last flight I had, directly after launch, the motor started running intermittently. Brought the plane back in, changed batteries and had the same happen. We re-bound it to my DX-6i and the same result. Checked it on a DX-4, and a DX-8i with the same ending. All my other 3 planes fly on the DX-6i with not issues.
Am I looking at a bad motor or a bad ESC? The rest of the servos worked flawlessly.

My guess would be esc, but try running the motor with power applied directly.
Motors tend, with some exceptions, to either work or not work... But it could be as simple as a dodgy solder vibrating loose.

Yep, bad ESC or a bad connection. Check connections carefully > stress and wiggle. If they are OK it's probably the ESC. The Cub ESC is not a great piece of electronics, unfortunate for a $50 replacement of a proprietary part.

SC most likely the Bullet Connectors from Motor to ESC...if not ESC itself. ( My guess Connectors got loose from all the vibration and moving them around )
Let us Know .

I went ahead and ordered the ESC. The plane is up at the camper, will check the connections when we get there tomorrow morning.

Connections were tight on the old ESC. Installed the new one and had no issues all weekend.

What prop are you using? Do you fly a lot at full throttle?

Stock prop, no more than 3/4 throttle even in our Texas winds.
Aircraft is close to 2 yrs old.

That should have been OK. Sounds like you just got a funky ESC. Unfortunately not as rare as it ought to be, especially for the price. Not nice of them to make a combined unit like that from the customer perspective. Good for business though...

I'm with you on the cost. $45 for the DSM Cub Version. And $55 for the Cub S with SAFE ESC.
I just picked up a Turnigy 30 Amp for another project for $12.

The Spektrum RX insided is the thing, they ain't cheap by themselves. They rarely go bad, the ESC often does. So, you end up buying both to get what you need at 1/4 the cost of the entire plane. I for one will not buy anything proprietary anymore if I can possibly avoid it. I had to learn that the hard way like everyone else.

I may see if I can salvage the RX then. I have a foam-board F-22 I may use it on and save my other new RX's for something else.

It's setup for rudder elevator. The F22 is a delta/elevon? Not sure if you can do that....maybe.
