I had planned on buying a SC this week but I have been torn as to doing some training befroe I buy it or purchase it and accept whatever happens. I've talked to RC pilots, read a lot of stuff and came to the decision to purchase the fsone flight simulator. I got it last Tuesday and loaded it onto my computer. I've only had time to generally peruse the program and from what I can see it is as about close to reality as it gets. I know there is nothing like getting outside and flying but, "a man has to know his limitations." I'll still be lurking around here and keeping you all updated on my progress and looking forward to when the SC will be my first airplane.

Swimmer, i just went for it!!! I had the act on and in fairness its amazing how easy these things are to fly? I was a complete novice, never flown anything on a sim or in real life and i just gave myself plenty of altitude to enable a recovery but id say go out and get stuck in!!!

Go ahead and practice with that SIM. Some people have a gaming background and a lot of inherent talent. Most are fumble-thumbs. I learned with a mentor and have since taught 3 guys to fly. In the beginning and for a couple months after they send it right into the ground without supervision. Getting the R/L thing while coming at you, dealing with wind, and getting the hang of take offs and landings are all difficult at first.
Frazer-Jeez man, turn off ACT! That product sucks. Check around the forum. You won't find anyone but new fliers that have been sucked in by the marketing BS using it.

ACT works by using sensors looking at the ground and horizon. It differentiates shade (dark ground/light sky) and tries to keep them that way. If the plane goes up or down too fast and the shade isn't right it 'takes control' AWAY from you and essentially neutralizes the controls. You can achieve the SAME result just by letting go of the sticks. Of course new pilots don't they just over correct some more. The high wing Cub will self correct in time but not immediately.
If ACT kicks in up high, no problem, but then letting go of the sticks would work also. If it happens down low you have NO ABILITY TO CORRECT SINCE CONTROL IS REMOVED! Just like letting go of the sticks once you pointed it straight at the ground from 20 feet up it's going in! Its not useful down low and wrecks more planes than it saves, but it sure sounds good to new fliers. Since they can't fly anyway and they wreck anyway they figure it would only have been worse without it. They can't differentiate between their short comings and ACT's problems.
So it works up high where you don't really benefit from it and screws you up down low when it doesn't help. It also gets totally confused when you fly over water, snow or very light ground surfaces (light concrete, sand) since it doesn't know what to do with that. It's NOT SMART, it's just a shade sensor.
Yes, live in Seattle proper, just NE of the U of W. There's a nice park, Sand Point/Magnuson Park, just a mile from me with good flying, a happy coincidence.

Small world, I went to school in Ellensburg many years ago at CWU. I didn't care for the desert much. I missed the trees and green so I'm happy to be back in Portland.

I am fascinated with the FS One RC Simulator. It is amazing. Anyway, I continue to practice, practice and practice some more. There is a J3 cub that I fly to get the feel of the Super Cub. Take off goes just fine but I am still trying to get the landings correct. I also practice with the place flying towards me to get orientation burned into my little brain. More later.

I struggled when i first started when the SC was coming towards me (controls reversed etc) but i found a easy way to remember stuff. if the SC is coming towards an it starts veering off to the right, push the stick on the tx right, and visa versa. thats how i remember it

Exactly! Move the aileron control toward the dipped wing. This little trick has revolutionized my flying. Such a simple thing.
