To everyone:Hi,I'm slowly starting to beef up my super cub.I live in western Washington. So it could be a month or more till I'm not @ work and it's not raining or windy,I wont be flying for quite awhile. So in that down time it's time to reinforce the S/C.QUESTION:Where do I need to beef it up.The battery box??the tail??Basically I need to know exactly what are the Cub's weak points.I posted a similar thread a few pages back, and great response.Thanks.But I'm looking for more detailed ares of weakness, and tips on the fixes. And why not cover the entire fuse, and wings with a good heavy duty clear packing tape?I had a little firebird phantom,I did just that it flew great, foam never ever broke where the tape was.I don't suggest putting anything on the actual flight control surfaces, these are critical SAFETY OF FLIGHT items that should be left alone,or am I wrong,is there a why to reinforce the flight control surfaces??Rudder and Elevater.I imagine you can put a little packing tape on the bull nose (L/E) of your VERT STAB, and your HORZ STABI'm planing on carbon fiber strips .057"x.177"x what ever length I cut them to.On the fuse tail join area 2 each on both sides.CA the battery box in and put tape to reinforce the entire wing box area. after C/F strip and CA reinforcing.I will put A good quality clear packing tape over every bite of the entire fuse, the ends of tape will extend a good inch or so beyond the fwd nose section, this will be folded over the motor mount area for extra support.I might use the same size C/F strips on the over wing area 8" long one @ the L/E and one @ the T/E.Glue them down with CA,and then tape. The entire wing will be wrapped tight in clear packing tape. The wing tips will be doubled or even tripled.I will use stock struts, with fishing line running along side of strut, just as a redundancy. How should the antenna wire be ran?Just kinda hanging down FWD of the HORZ STAB?Or put through the 2 tiny holes on the upper tip of the VERT STAB??Should the motor gears be lubed at all? if my little plan sounds good,or if you guys feel I should alter,or just plane abort my reinforcement ideas all together, please let me know.

Front to back: Packing tape on the inside/outside of the cowl. Packing tape along the leading edges and tips of the wings. Packing tape along the top and battom of the center section of the wing (helps with the rubber bands). Packing tape around the fuselage just in front of the tail section. Also thing about carbon fiber rods and strips in some critical areas like wing chord and rudder/elevators. I placed my antennae through the two holes in the vertical stabilizer.

Ok.That sounds good.I've got some aluminum tape. It's called speed tape.We use it in the aircraft industry for flight line repairs and such.Very strong very light, and it should do the trick along with packing tape in the areas you and i mentioned.Let you know how it flies,if it would ever stop raining on my days off.

Here is what I suggest for reinforcement: 1. Poke a 48" carbon fiber rod through the styrofoam just behind the leading edge of the top wing. This will keep you from taking chunks out of the wing if you should run into something. Also, this will stiffen up the wing somewhat and keep it from breaking during flight
2. I suggest poking 2 more 48" carbon fiber rods through the top wing just to give it the additional strength.
3. I suggest poking several carbon fiber rods from the tail up through the fuselage walls to as far forward as you can get it. This will keep the tail from breaking off should you have a nose in landing. One of the weak spots in the SC is where the plastic ends attaching the tail to the fuselage. The fuselage has a tendency of snapping off right here.
4. I suggest poking carbon fiber rods from the front of the fuselage toward the back of the plane. Make sure when you do this to keep the Carbon fiber rod above (more toward the top wing) the rubber band attachment posts. By doing this you are preventing the rubber band attachment posts from ripping out of the fuselage if you have an unfortunate nose in landing.
Hope this helps. Bob

sounds like a lot of overkill to me. put the tape on the leading edge and the wing saddle-area and let it be. tape on the inside of the cowl is also a good way to add a bit of strength...i probably went through 15 before doing that. 15*$3 a piece....$45. wow.

Another area mine was getting weak was at the battery box. I removed it, epoxied around the bottom of the plastic box that touches foam and reinstalled it to dry. So far very strong.

Where can a person purchase carbon fiber rods? Can the wing struts be removed after installing the carbon fiber rods?

I agree with admiralev: sounds like lots of over kill to me too.
Packing tape is all one should need to do some minor reinforcing. Maybe the bamboo skewer threw the rear of the fuselage too.
Keep in mind this is a Cub and is not meant for dive bombing and aerobatic maneuvers. It's a perfect scale flyer that can do the odd loop or roll.

Not a dive bomber? Oh contrare my friend. I like to go 200 ft up, drop the nose to the ground & push full throttle. She makes a heck of a scream. Just pull it up gently or else watch that tail snap off.

Before I maidened mine I taped leading and trailing edges, cowling, area around dowels that rubber bands attach to, area around batt box access, tail, etc, etc, Mine looks like someone at UPS was drunk and went crazy with the packing tape !! But it has held up well. ;D

Hey all, I found some great tape for reinforcing the edges of the wings. It sticks down REALLY flat around corners where it wrinkles, and is really light. It's apparently just called "paper tape" according to my mom, who's a nurse. It's found in most first aid kits. See the pics :-)
