Sounds like mine. I've gone through a lot of cowls also. They seem to break easily. Hopefully they won't be as rigid once it warms up here.

I glued nylon window screen mesh to the front of my cowl to keep snow out of the air intakes. I wonder if we coated the whole inside of the cowl with the mesh if it would strengthen the cowl?
Another option that would unfortunately add weight: coat the inside with plastic-dip spray. It would give the cowl a rubber coating inside. I use this method to strengthen some brittle plastic gear covers in rc cars. It would work, but the coating would change the cg.

Bar, with all that electrical tape on your leading edge and duct tape on the cowl you may want to check your cg to see if your way nose heavy causing flying issues.

do you think that the electrial tape on the leading edge would miss up your cg? ,because i have it done too mine but have not had my sc on its madian flight yet,im waiting for the spring,i was reading too use clear packing tape instead ,im going to remove the elec tape and use that ,but was wondering should i just put one layer of tape, i dont know if that would be suffecent or are people putting more than one layer. thnxxx

bar- use 2 pieces of CF rod the next time it breaks like that. I simply inserted 2 pieces of cf with a lil epoxy on them about 5 inches long. It has never broke there again since.

Here's my tail repair....... Epoxy resin soaked wire mesh wrapped around the whole tail/fuselage section........ not sure if it'll be much better yet but it's dried really strong so should deal with most of the stress caused. Bar, your wing looks strangely familiar to mine with all that black tape ;D Great minds think alike

What kind of mal-manuever causes the the tail to break off?

I seem to break my tail off when flying in 10 to 15 mph winds (or greater)
It's usually the result of a bad landing and it goes sideways/tail down first, normally enough to give it a good split or indeed a clean break :-)
I know flying in wind is a no no but I live in Scotland and there's rarely a day goes by without gusts and wind. :-(

If it is tail heavy you may be getting the tail first landings. I run mine slightly nose heavy and the tail is always the last thing to touch down, even on a poor landing in the wind.
