What do the motor numbers like 180, 370, 450, 480... actually refer to?

i don't thing there is really a standard for electric motor numbering anymore. any more it seems to be similar to a performance rating in a way. here is a link i found that kind of explains it.

Thanks for the link. This seems to be the take home message from the link: "All you can say definitely is that 400s are smaller than 600s and 700s are bigger still....The naming conventions for brushless motors vary by company and the motors themselves are so versatile that it is not possible to give much in the way of general guidelines." Too bad...

In brushed motor it refers to the can length, but again, performance varies by company and design quality.
