Hello everyone. I'm going to introduce myself and ask for help at the same time! I am a young 73 and have flown RC before, but many years ago. That was a WOT4 which is still in the loft somewhere.
Late 2016 I decided I would like to try my hand at flying again, but electric, not the 2 stroke engine with all of the problems of glowplugs, carburettors, etc etc. So I bought a Hobbyzone Supercub with Spektrum DX4e transmitter, then for various reasons I didn't get round to trying to fly it until a couple of weeks ago, although I did connect up the battery and try out the controls, and I did charge the LiPo battery a few times in the interim.
When I set everything up this time, the prop gave it's usual jump when the battery was connected, and the rudder and elevators responded to the tx, but no throttle. I charged up the LiPo battery and tried again, but this time there was no response at all. I had noticed that the rx/esc had a red light showing when the battery was attached, but now that was no longer lit.
I visited my local model shop in Leeds ( Flying Models ) and the young chap there said my battery was u/s, which is what I suspected as it was rather spongy!! So I invested in a new battery but on trying this out the result was the same - nothing.
Do I conclude that somehow I have fried the rx/esc, or could the tx have become unbound ? from the rx, or is there something glaringly obvious that I am not seeing?
Any help would be much appreciated as I was looking forward to getting airborne again.
Thanks from Barry in Leeds

well...could be a couple things...I would unhook the Rx/ESC unit and make sure All connections are correct and actually connected and make sure the battery lead is not loose or came apart then retry it BUT which Supercub do you have ? there are a couple different ones and have different Rx's-ESC's but if you are not getting power to the RX/ESC it may appear that is the issue let us know and btw WELCOME...a little more info may help us help you which one looks like the one in your plane ? who is it different ?

I say hello old chap and welcome to the site , just thinking if you have had the plane lying about for a while ,are the transmitter batteries charged, also could one of the power wires have come off the motor. and if the plane is one of the really ones ,of course with 27 mhz the crystal might be dead. but they all fly well . and if you can fly a Wot4 with ease how about the Acrowot foame that is a classy plane. if i remember rightly the esc on the receiver board is lightly to pack up , i bypassed one by plugging a seperate esc into the throttle channel on the receiver, but of course it was a brushed to lipo esc ,they are probably hard to get hold of now. chris

Wow, thanks for the prompt replies. I have now tried brand new duracell batts in the tx, still no reaction from rx. I have checked all of the connections from the battery to the rx/esc, and from the rx/esc to the motor; all good. The rx/esc is the top one in your picture - RoHS Spektrum SPMA3170 DSMX. A little more background; the rx did work 100% some weeks ago, throttle and control surfaces reacted to tx, but I didn't fly the plane, just taxied it ( bottled out ). Then this time only the control surfaces reacted, no throttle response. The after trying to charge the ( original ) LiPo battery again, no response at all. Same with new LiPo battery. The strange thing is that the motor does 'clunk' whenever the battery is attached, so something is getting to the rx/esc. All seems to point to the rx/esc being damaged somehow.

Hello again its starting to sound like the esc on the control board ,unfortunately that is the dearest part of the plane ,it might be worth looking on the internet for a secondhand one as a lot of people upgrade ,with brushless motors and sell the originals on.but dont be afraid to push the throttle forward ,once you have it sorted mostly the supercub can fly itself ,also just thinking the brushes may have burnt out on the motor ,when the battery is connected is there any smell coming from the components, sometimes a give away, the motor is about £10 the receiver about £50 .anyway good luck .chris

do you have a Horizon hobby over there or Hobbyzone
I would call their support folks and ask them if there is a reset or if a certain issue with that SAFE Rx/ESC....it is a 3 channel SAFE Rx .
you may check the solder joint where it attaches to the Rx/ESC board
sounds like it gets power for that second and then nothing does not take much to pull that joint loose and it still be attached but not secure to pass power through it
seems you have not had it that long they may help out on a replacement unit
worth looking into either way
but I fear the unit is bad....

Problem solved! Somehow the transmitter had lost it's binding to the rx. The nice guys at The Model Shop, Leeds sorted it for me. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions; hopefully I will be reporting on my first flight in the near future.
