Ok, i'm new to the whole electronics thing, so i'd appreciate any help. I was told on rcgroups.com that a thunderbird 18 was a great esc to upgrade my sc to brushless. So i ordered it as well as a cellpro 4s charger and 1320 lipo. Can somebody please recommend a brushless motor that will give me a lot of power, yet not fry my esc? Thanks.

The eflite 450 outrunner is great. You can also use the 2000kv eflite SIX motor and keep your gear reduction (much easier for new guy's). There are a ton of no name companies making lots of motors that will work fine in there. Matter of fact I have a couple of new ones right here if your interested. My pal Kirk uses the same one in his sc and brings up al kinds of stuff to drop with no issues at all. I will part with one for 15 bucks if your interested. Kevin

yeh i read your "brushless options" thread and really liked your setup. Just seems like that thread has kinda died down a little. I was thinking about trying to mimick your setup as it looked nice and easy. Looks like you just cut the gearbox housing down and put some longer screws in there? And where did u get those o-ring-looking things? Yeh man I'd be down with taking one of those motors off your hands depending on the cost. I was thinking about the first one you used, but i think u said it peaked at just over 19 amps. Would this fry my thunderbird 18 esc, being that it's rated at 18 amps? I almost regret buying it now but a guy at rcgroups.com who has been a lot of help told me it's a great esc and very good for noobs like me. I'm just at the point now where the lack of power is making my SC flights, well, just not the same as they used to be while i was still teaching myself to fly her.

Well to be honest the best way to go with a BL motor is the 450. It draws only 12a constant and your thunderbird 18 will be just fine for it. The 450 peaks at 18a which is not likely to happen with the cub. I think the highest I saw with this motor was 16a. I use the 18's myself in a lot of my planes. They are great esc's for the money.
Those o-ring things are shock pistons from a traxxas revo.
