Hey guys. Went to the hobby store the other day and got all the parts to build my own custom SC. I decided that if this plane has THIS much of an internet following.... Time to buy one. Got all stock parts except the power system and radio equipment. Running my stryker C batteries in it. 3c lipo 2200mah.
Electrifly SS-25 esc,
Himax outrunner HC2816-0890
Hitec micro reciever.
Maidend the Super Duper Cub on Monday evening. Here's some pics of my set up.
First.... The motor and mount... I made the mount from a piece of 1" plywood and two layers of lite ply. A dremel and a little epoxy and now we have a prototype. I screwed the mount to the stock firewall. Note.. I used a heavy mount idea because I knew the SC would need wieght up front to balance. Otherwise the way to go is to build a "Box mount" from lite ply. The Himax will prove to be an outstading choice in a power plant for this model.
Next up is a view from the bottom of the fuse. You can see where I removed the forward part of the battery box for lipo use. Also note the slightly overkill 25 amp esc.
Here's a view from the top with the wing taken off. The lipo is installed in through the hole cut in the battery bay. Perfect fit. Just slide it strait in.
I stuck a square of red monocote to the bottom of the wings and a small piece on top for the first flight. Not going to spend hours on graphics just yet!! NOTE.... The SC balanced in at 2-1/2" back from the leading edge of the wing. Didnt add ANY wieght! Talk about lucky.
A couple friends and I took it out on Monday evening with the camcorder in hand. It was a about 15mph winds and kind of gusty. Flew anyway. Really put the new powersystem to the test! I only used about half throttle to take off the first time. Full throttle generates gobs of thrust for such a light model. Perfect silent take off. Made a few circles and pulled a quick loop.. still at half throttle. Came in for landing number 1. No suprises. The wind was blowing pretty good so I had to bring it in under power and set it down. Second flight. Took off with more power this time and carved a hard turn towards downwind. Still no suprises. A little "catchy" wings tips in the wind everynow and then. Pulled three consecutive tight loops at about 3/4 throttle. Little or no air speed loss. Second landing not as pretty.. Nice gust durring touch down and got a little sidways.. Not too hairy though. Third flight. (same battery... still not even showing signs of getting low) FULL THROTTLE take off. Rolled three feet and pulled strait up. Up to about 50 feet.. cut the throttle and carved hard left, letting the wind pull the plane down range. Brought the power back on as all air speed was scrubbed in the turn. Came back around and flew it right in front of me as slow as it would fly. Full throttle and pulled strait up. The plane kept picking up speed. I cut the throttle at about 80 feet. Unlimited verticle on the cub.
I could not be more pleased with this plane... AND I have video. If you need a wind proof SC...... here's your answer. I had about 20 min of airtime on the lipo and still did not hit the voltage cut off. Nice. All that, and It's on my JR XP662 radio. I can take friends out to fly on the buddy box!! The SC is the fourth model programmed into my radio. Ailerons are a no-brainer at this point. Prolly get those on in the next week or two. Also planning a bomb drop mechanism.. I have two spare channels to play with..
