I had issues with my war Birds a few days back....had dumb thumbed my rates switch and had it on Low rates and these planes would not gain altitude
It resulted in running out of space and crashing them both
the FW-190 had no damage, the P-51 ended up hitting and pulling the retract out of the wing
left a large gash in the leading wing edge...had to replace the wing, I did that already
After figuring out my dumb mistake on the rate switch ( programmed the voice on my DX9 to tell me what rate i am in -should have done that first time )
SO.....
I gave the Freewing FW-190 a shot
here is that report if anyone is interested in the Event
copied and pasted from the RC Groups forum on the FW-190 thread there
here it is :
Did the 2nd maiden today ( as the first attempt ended in a crash because I had the low rate switch on-it would not climb, had to figure out my dumb thumb mistake )
Plane took off in about 6 feet of runway climbed almost straight up, and almost out of sight in seconds.
Power is sure not lacking in this plane . Whoever said this plane is docile must have been joking ?
seriously....this plane was a handful......because of my rather small field I have to get airborn in seconds and make a turn in another second...SO..full throttle is a must but WOW.....what power .
Expected left torque...but R/Rudder keeps it straight, lifts off the ground as i said less than 6 feet if that . Climbs out in a hurry......Now.....my small area requires almost a constant turn, so very little straight and level flight....( think Bristol Motor Speedway, for example )
" turn- level -turn " and as fast as you can read that .
It was windy...and as described my small field only allows me to take off one direction and no matter which way the wind blows I have to take off one way and because of the same field layout , I also have to turn and land only one direction...again no matter how the wind blows.
Wind was really harsh up high...this plane did not want to come down......at Half throttle it still wanted to climb...at a Qtr. throttle it barely leveled out....less than that helped bring it down. The glide on this plane is awesome ( but also can be scary )
my rather shaky hands made for some twitchy flying...especially when i raised the retracts...almost lost the plane.....same thing happened when I dropped the retracts........I always circle counterclockwise [ Right to Left ]......for so many minutes and then turn and go clockwise [ Left to Right ] - have to , to line up and land.
This plane is also very hard to orient in the sky the Blue-ish/Gray underbelly almost disappears.....I painted Yellow Wingtips on top...will have to place some Bright Yellow or White on the bottom of the wings as well.
Needless to say It was an exciting and scary flight....when i finally got this plane down .....and the horrible cross wind I could not land it......made a turn to the right and cut throttle it glided head high ( and literally at my head ) all the way across my field into a bush that stopped the glide.....lol
The wind direction when turning noses into the wind and nose raises....but continue turn and the wind goes across the nose
pushes it away from the runway...but also pushes the plane and makes landing difficult, and faster .
( also did the same to my Sportsman earlier, had trouble landing it as well , landings have been perfect until today that is )
have to say this plane flies like it is on rails...and it is much faster than I anticipated . Needless to say it needs more room to be comfortable in windy conditions....perhaps on a calmer day and now I know what to expect I should be able to calm it down at my location and it not be such a handful. Also getting the CG perfect will help as well I am sure.
Flaps would help slow this plane I think also.
Sorry for the long post, just trying to draw a picture of the event.
Note: I use a SAFE Receiver in all my planes now
I have one in this as well...had it not been for that safety net of the SAFE Rx
I believe I would have lost the plane or crashed it, probably both
all i can say is WOW...this plane is nice, and scary .
ran it on a 3S 2200 turnigy battery all the way forward
I believe will need some weight on the nose, seemed a tad tail heavy
Will need to set the CG with my CG machine to get it right
all i did was the finger test was close
flew it anyway.
