Sorry about the size of these, I'm a little comp challenged. Anyways, here's the brushless#1 I put in today. Used the Parkzone Typhoon BL motor, and just pressed on a new cub pinion. I changed out the radio receiver to a Hitec mini6, and used 2 HS81 servos Lastly here is a pic of the sound beacon in case I lose her in a field. I neeed to mount this a little better thouh. I'm WAY light on weight. It flew amazingly fast tonight on a 9 cell. I was a little disappointed at the duration, but will get some LIPOS soon to cure that. I'm also building a spare fuselage w/ a outrunner 450, that should be done by tomorrow, I'll post how that goes. As far as this one, I gotta add a little weight and balnce her a little better, but man does it SCREAM!!!!

I think my pictures were booted due to their size, I'll try and repost tomorrow. Sorry.

Hi timn. Your pics were not booted. I have checked your post and the link is wrong. At the beginning of the link it has https, get rid of the s and your pics will come up Cheers Paul

Timn,
Is that the stock motor mount? I am looking for a semi-easy way to convert to BL without messing with thrust angles.

Yes that is the stock mount w/ NO modification other than the top side(small black piece of plastic sleeve) that slides over the motor had to be slighty trimmed to allow a small area of that cooling fin on the new motor to fit. This was basically a plug N play switch.

Nice setup. Let us know how it compares with the 450 upgrade, when you're done.

Anyone who knows:
Is the stock motor an inrunner brushed motor?
If so, wouldn't it be easier to replace it with a brushless inrunner motor instead of an outrunner brushless motor and keep the same gear setup? Of course, you will need to have your own radio gear and purchase another ESC or BEC.
What are the benefits of outrunner vs. inrunner?

inrunners tend to be more expensive, and they are meant to be used with a gear box so they are a bit nosier. most outrunners are direct drive to the prop since they make more torque. but in the case of the cub its easy to slap on a inrunner in the place of the stock motor. but then again its not that hard to cut off the shaft tube on the stock motor mount and put on a out runner either.

timn, how did you "press" on a new pinion?

Hey geh
You can use a C clamp to press the new pinion on. Be careful not to press it on too far or the pinion won't line up with the gear in the gear box.
I used the exact same motor as timn. Getting the old pinion off was a little more challenging though. I don't have a gear puller so a brute force method was used.

What ESC did you use for your new motor and if you wanted to could you have used the existing servos or do they have to be changed out.

timn, how did you "press" on a new pinion? Glyn Someone posted a technique for this on RC groups using a drill press to take one off or put one on. To take one off, I think he chucked a small finish nail. Then he used a fork underneath the pinion to support it with that braced by blocks of wood while he used the drill press as a press to press on the shaft and forced the pinion off. dave mc

zeta30 thanks. The c-clamp worked well. I used a pinion puller to get the pinion off. I am using the e-flite Pro 25Amp brushless ESC. I got the motor today and everything installed and did a test flight this evening. I'm impressed so far with the motor and ESC.

geh,
glad to hear you got everything running good. The 25 Amp ESC should be plenty. The Typhoons, (which is what these motors were made for), only have 20 amp ESC.
dbuck,
unfortunately you can't use the servos that came with the SC. The stock servos are a strange 4 or 5 wire proprietary servo by HobbyZone. Regular servos are only 3 wires. I just used cheapo Spektrum S75 servos that I had laying around and they work great. They are only about $13/each.
