I bought this plane because it said it has a virtual fence. Well, being next to a highway I am always on edge at times
due to a fear of a plane getting away onto that highway.
This plane seemed to be the fix for that worry and concern, so i jumped the gun and pre-ordered it before it came out.
Has been setting in it's box, decided to put it together.
This is a very large plane and is very well made and it is a beauty. But after researching the system and watching video's
and getting input by those using it, other than a few mistakes by some, this plane Does do exactly what it is suppose to do,
However, that is where my problem begins .
In a normal location it is the perfect beginner and experts plane, in a small location it would be near impossible, and here is why:
This plane has a Auto land feature, it has a holding pattern feature and of course Two Different Virtual fences and has all
the SAFE modes .
Now, the way the plane works one with a push of a button the plane will turn and line up and land without any input from
the pilot ( or one can help it stay lined up if need be in winds for example ).....BUT in my small field the way it does that
would put mine in the tree's.
The Virtual fences are Park and Field...one is a circle and the other a rectangle shape...which is great ( if set up right that is )
The issue comes in when IF you hit the fence the plane automatically goes into it's Holding pattern. Which it climbs out to
120 feet and makes a circle out in front of where you preset the GPS before take off. My issue again goes back to my small field
and how the plane flies Itself to get to holding pattern and where the holding pattern circle takes place, which could be to far away
and or over the neighbors etc etc.
The GPS can be turned off loosing those abilities and still have SAFE, but going through the process to set it up is a chore and then
every time you change batteries you havwe to go through it all again and then fly the plane and turn off the GPS each time.
I have been using a E-Flite SAFE Rx in all my models lately. I have found that system allows me to fly my planes normally and still
have the SAFE modes and also AS3X for my very windy location . It gives me a safety factor of panic mode if I find myself in a bad
situation and it also allows the SAFE modes for limiting control surface movements on those days I have some dumb thumbs. The AS3X
gives me help in the wind which is always blowing here . That SAFE System alone gives me a lot of peace of mind flying where I do.
SO...in this New Sportsman I removed it's SAFE/GPS Units, which are separate , But can Not function without each other, which I found
to be pretty silly , But it is what it is. I installed a E-Flite SAFE RX system out of the Apprentice, as I have that RX in many models now.
It did not take any changes all works perfectly.
I also installed some Great Nav lights that I bought from MyTrickRC.com, Dan does a great job on these, it has a control board very nice.
this Sportsman is a Beautiful Aircraft and with the Lights it is perfect . Sometimes one has to do some modifications to enjoy a model.
In this case just removing that Unit and installing another still gives the plane all it needs and adding some lights sets it off.
here is a few video's showing the Lights. I also used some clear lenses i got from ParkFlyer Plastics .
