Hello,
I am new to RC flying.
I got a Super Cub and a Sport Cub (both with SAFE) along with a DX6 for Christmas. I have flown both with better success flying the smaller Sport Cub. The Super Cub had a few short flights before I nosed it over in the grass on take-off the 5th or 6th time. No big deal, just a nose-over - except the motor would not shut off. It was flopping around like a dead fish upside down on the grass. I finally decided to step on the prop and that smoked the motor in short order!
That was a month and a half ago. I now have a brushless conversion and a prop saver, but no SAFE as I had to replace the ESC as part of the conversion. Just waiting for good enough weather to take it to a proper model airfield and maiden it with the new stuff. That might be a while since we are expecting 10 or more inches of snow over the next couple of days.
In the meantime I have enjoyed reading several of the threads here. Very informative and entertaining!

Welcome along, you'll learn a lot here, I did and do. I wouldn't worry about not having the SAFE probably better to teach your thumbs and then you're ok for future planes that don't have the option. A good mod I found was to fit bigger wheels to help prevent nose-overs.

Thank you for the welcome(s). There is a lot of info to absorb for sure.
I had installed the Multiplex Fun Cub wheels as a wheel mod, but the field I was trying to take-off from is simply too bumpy even for those overly large wheels. Hand launches and some landings were OK, but I will have to find a different field if I want to take off from the ground. There is a model airfield sort of in the area, but it is a long drive (20 - 25 minutes). While it was snowing yesterday I spend time Google mapping the area and have identified a couple of different places nearby I can hopefully try.
Now we just need to melt off the 10 inches or so of snow. However, with yet more to come during the next week I think it might be quite a while before I get the chance.

Fit floats then. :-)

The thought of getting floats has crossed my mind. ;-) Considering I am learning to fly in general, I wonder if it would be more, or less, difficult to learn to fly with floats instead of wheels.

On snow would be better but get some practice in before water. :-)

Flying one with floats is about the same. Taking off is easy, landings are more tricky because you have to cut your airspeed and fly it to the water. You can't just flop it down or you will be floating up side down on the wing. Keep your wings level and lightly touch down. Slow and graceful. On windy days I go with wheels.

If I practiced with floats and water right now it would technically be ON water - even in the event of a crash. Most of the water around here seems to have a rather solid consistency to it at the moment.
The tips on flying from water are appreciated. Maybe even later this summer I can put them to good use as long as I can get lots of practice and improve enough.

If your new to flying with floats over water and doing water landings with them, then be sure to have a retrieval means handy. Be it an rc boat or a kayak, something is necessary to get the SC back to shore if it has a wreck or becomes incapaciated for some reason. If flipped over, it won't always simply float or power in to the shore. Me, I'd also suggest putting on a coat of Corrosion X to any metal part or electrical part which may get moisture or be exposed to the water. Prevents rust and corrosion. Good luck in flying with floats. Me, I love them on my SC.
