Need help with SC package

New to SC but used to run highly modified rc 20 years ago. 

I've been looking to put together a full SC package for my sons (9 years old). They have more than enough rc experience and ready for outdoor planes. So I'm looking for a BNF so I can get a radio with more channels to mod the SC as they learn to fly. Totally confused on modern radios operating in the new spectrum. 

Looking for suggestion for radio that can take into account any and all mods done to plane. This will be a learning chassis so anything goes. At the same time, too much technology isn't good either.

Looking at Spektrum DX6i. From my reading it works with anything I throw at it including the helis. Can someone confirm I'm on the right track.

DX6i is a good radio for up to 6 channel planes and most helicopters.

It's DSMX so works with all current bnf models, and all current Spektrum and equivalent receivers.

If you may want more than 6 channels, the DX7/8 are also superb radios and offers some functions missing from the 6i (but don't ask me for details as I'm not up on the 7 or 8 channel models)

You should find the 6i does all you need though.

DX6i is a good transmitter but an older version the New design is the DX6 ( I have one now ) or better yet the DX9 if your willing to spend the money.( I wasn't..lol )

I do not know if you can get the older Super Cub...I think the only one they are putting out is the New SAFE version, which is the exact same thing
just a different RX set up in it .

It can be modified over time.

The SAFE would allow them to get use to flying it .

You may even consider the Sport Cub, it already has ailerons-flaps- and AS3X set up in the RX already.
Basically all the mods everyone did to their older Super Cub, in a pre made package.....
