Yesterday i picked up a HZ Super Cub S RTF at the LHS. I have been flying since last august and this is the first 3 channel plane i have ever flown. To be honest, i didn't realize the Super Cub was 3 channel until i got home and started building it. My primary trainer is a homebuilt foamboard 4 channel simular to a ugly stick but with dihedral added. After over a hundred flights its starting to wear out so i went looking for a replacement and i have always liked the looks of the Cubs. I have also heard alot of good things about SAFE and AS3X, so when i saw the Super Cub S i grabbed it without a second thought.
I was disapointed when i learned it was a 3 Channel, but assembly was easy and its a good looking plane that has a nice size and uses 3s Batteries that i have alot of. I took it to the club field today and flew 3 batteries through it. I found beginner mode too restrictive, but i can see how it would be useful for someone just starting out. In fact i had to switch to experienced mode just to get it to come back down, i cut the throttle and it just floated along on the winds. So i switched modes and put it into a dive and decided to try the Panic Button. It worked perfectly and leveled the plane out about 50 feet up and i was able to land it without too much of a problem. it was a little more challenging to line up with the runway in crosswinds without ailerons, but nothing really too hard and it floated in for a nearly perfect 3 point landing. I couldn't ask for much more! It is a relaxing plane to fly, The AS3X makes it very stable in the wind and it will be my go-to plane for warmup flights before i fly my other planes.
Tonight i discovered this site dedicated to the Super Cubs and i'm looking forward to reading about everything you guys know about this great bird. I wish there were sites like this for my other planes, its great to have a whole site for the plane!
