Older SC to New Safe SC worth it ?

Most of us have the Older Super Cub that is now discontinued.

They now have introduced the New Super Cub with SAFE Technology .

The only difference is the DSMX SAFE Receiver / ESC Unit that comes with the New Plane

Everything else is identical to the older SC .

The SAFE Technology helps a beginner to learn to fly easier and allows them the ability to level the plane out in case of a mishap
simply by pushing a Panic button that will automatically level the plane.

The system also allows them different modes from Beginner to Experienced, so they can learn at a simple pace.

The great thing about the system is the ability for take off's and landings .

We all know how at times those two simple tasks are hard to master and how many mishaps occur while taking off or landing.

The plane with it's beginner mode allows the plane with just throttle to rise at a set angle making take off's easier to do
Also on landings by decreasing throttle and holding the panic button, it allows a simple decent so the plane lands level and smoother with no input.

Beginner mode and Intermediate mode also limit the roll and pitch of the plane, while experienced mode allows one to fly the plane normally .
The AS3X® stabilization system helps to maintain the flight stability even in moderate winds.


The reason for this thread is the wonder IF obtaining the DSMX SAFE Receiver / ESC Unit and installing it in ones SC is worth the effort .

The older Unit has a set up for the "bomb" drop mechanism, I do not know if anyone uses it...but that Unit has little else going for it.
Yes the SC is a nice Beginners plane and allows one to learn as is........the SAFE for some may increase their ability to have more of a
Pleasurable flight , with less stress and the ability in case of trouble to have that Panic button to straighten out their Cub

Many have already surpassed all those things and have gone to ailerons, and brushed motors , etc etc etc...so to them it would be meaningless.

But to some of us who still love the simplicity of slow stress free flight, would it be worth investing in such a venture ?

I am considering it myself, just for the reasons I explained above.

I have purchased a Delta Ray that has that Technology. I have read many reviews concerning that plane and it seems like one I will enjoy.

But after reading about the SAFE technology, I thought what would it be like in the Cub ? I do not wish to buy another complete Cub, I have no
reason to. I already have all the parts for another one except the Receiver/ESC Unit . I bought those parts when I bought my Cub , just in case.

I would not want to build another one,I believe I will simply change out the SAFE / ESC Unit .

It is about $ 56.00 dollars.....that is cheap compared to an entire new plane .

I am basically thinking out loud and typing it here for all to see.

My Cub as is flies very well, but at times as I mentioned can be a handful, especially when landing or taking off

And in the new field I am in, the winds are someone more of a concern as it is more open than the other place I was flying in.

Already the swirling winds at times makes for some "O No " moments......it can feel calm but suddenly not be.

An issue I learned the hard way a few days back . The AS3X Stabilizer System would also help in those moments.

This is just food for thought, and I thought I would pass the idea on to others and get some input and advice from other
Super Cub owners. You already know the joy of flying it and your learning with it over time.

What do you think ? Would you consider it ? I am sure many have spent that in repairs or other RC products and accessories for their Cub or other projects ?

I have spent a ton in a short time,way to much as a matter of fact.....But I am thinking about it myself.

What do you think ? Would love to get some feedback about it.

Not for me. I bought my cub to learn to fly and not to learn to lean on electronics.

In much the same way as I learned to drive, and race, cars without ABS, ESP, and even power steering.

I think learning how to detect and correct the things you get thrown at you is part of the fun. A stability program for the wind? I can see the appeal, but its not for me.

Id rather have the satisfaction of knowing it was me that put it on its wheels in 10mph wind

Flying aides like this depend a lot on the needs, abilities, and applications of the pilot.
Sham thinks it's a 'crutch'. You may think it as an 'aide'.
You have a Delta (coming?). I suggest you wait and see how it works understanding that it's an entirely different aircraft and the specifics may not transfer completely.

Aren't you the one that posted that the DX4e with SAFE is also somewhat modified? It's not just a new ESC but the differences may not be major. I don't have a clue how it might be used with a different TX. Seems proprietary equipment always has a 'gottcha'.

The SC flies very well as is. But I am now located in a field that has a different dynamic to it.

Have been trying to get a handle on the aspects of why and how.

This new field has odd winds that go across it at different levels and different from one side to the other and constantly changing, even when I can not see ( tree tops-or ribbons moving ) nor feel any wind at all .
( I have Red ribbons tied into the tree's that surround my field for reference and also small posts here and there set 25 feet from the treeline with a different color ribbon attached to know at the posts I still have 25 feet to the tree line )
My eyesight is not what it use to be and judging the distance is hard at times, but seeing those ribbons in the trees or on the posts allows me to judge the distance and allows me to see how the wind is blowing and in what direction.

Those twisting winds can be blowing at me one second then behind me the next to left or right of me and back again . they are forever changing and doing the day, they can be very hard in that field and you can walk out of it and it not be blowing anywhere else . I can watch the tree's at the fields edge sway very hard and the house directly across from it, it's trees are not moving at all.....

while flying, those winds can truly mess with your plane, both the small ones( Champ ) and the larger ones like the Cub.

Had I been in the other location as I was last year, I doubt I would have even thought about it.

Now I have to fly just at particular times, mostly early mornings and or late evenings, but even then , the wind can suddenly kick up in that field and get some pretty good gusts.

I do now have a Delta Ray ( bought it cause folks were raving about it's looks and flying ) It does look great and will soon learn how it flies, whenever this rain and winds stop .

I believe IF anything helps in any manner to make flying less stressful and can aid in that, to me is a Plus .
I have planes that simply can be flown, but it always feels like your throwing them around the sky and always one second from crashing and to me that's not relaxing and causes Stress.....and with me and my health , Stress is something I can not afford to be under.

I have been over on another forum and someone bought a Delta Ray and was saying they bout the Bind and Fly version and their older DX4e that has the Act system ( 2 pos switch)posed a problem cause the Newer SAFE technology requires a 3 position switch to operate the Mode levels.
Mode one is beginners, mode two is Intermediate and mode Three is experienced

And with the older style TX you lose the Intermediate mode .

They say the Experienced and Intermediate modes are the same, but after reading about it, they can't be.
Intermediate still only allows the control throws to go so far ( no over control)...as the Experience mode flies without any limitations.
Maybe one can fly without the Int. Mode and go straight into the Exp. mode..but I dare say most will jump from Beginners to Intermediate and fly it in Int. Mode more cause of just those limits..you still have allot of movement but not so much to invert the plane or roll it to far over for example .

The Super Cub will be a total different aspect to Safe I believe. The Cub is still a 3 ch plane and your not going to have that roll rate as one does with an aileron plane...but to me the Safe with the AS3X stability would allow someone like me to fly easier in that strange windy field dimension .It would also allow me in case of those winds causing a dive for example to simply hit a panic button that would level it out on it's own without my input to try and correct it.

Also my field is rough and has a field grass in it ( I mowed it to nubs ) but still a rough landing it is. And the SAFE would also allow me to take off and land easier due that that same system the use of the panic button that will keep the plane level and rise at a correct angle and or descend at the correct angle .

I do not consider any help in flight as a crutch, From Gyro's to Safe to even GPS

they all in their different ways help the pilot fly and that is what flying is about and why even in real panes they have such technology to do just that.

The older ACT system was a good concept, except it simply did not work . But most everyone here still bought the plane and many even flew it using the ACT system ( some learning the hard way ) but still many had no issues.

After I called and spoke to Horizon Hobby about the SAFE system and also about their Transmitters, I found out they have phased out all the DX4e and DX5e radios with the 2 Pos switch and now they all have the 3 position switch .
The SAFE Receiver / ESC in the New S model Super Cub is the Only thing in that model that changed.The Motor, servos, etc etc are all Identical and the hook ups for the New SAFE Receiver / ESC are the same as the older hook ups on that Receiver / ESC that had the ACT .
At least that is what they say.

Yes there always seems to be a catch with upgrading from one to the other...the TX 3 position switch need is one of them it appears.
But who knows like with the Super Cub as we all have flown one, having that SAFE and not having Int.mode will not be a problem, still having the Beginner mode to limit throws if needed and especially the Panic button that would allow easier take offs and landings and even to level the plane out in case of one of those crazy moments we all have..and that Panic button works in every Mode.

I am still considering the SAFE Receiver / ESC Unit for the SC...I simply believe at my location it will come in handy even if I fly it in Experience mode the panic button alone will help in those trouble moments and especially with Take offs and Landings on my field.
Plus the AS3X Stabilizer will help me deal with those crazy winds . ( Without trying to figure a way to get a Flight Stabilizer system hooked up in what i already have )

I bought a couple of these awhile back , I just have not used them yet ( can't be done in the SC to deal with winds)

One thing I wanted to mention about the Delta Ray as you will hear on the Flight Test Video it does have Brushed Motors, but there is an upgrade one can do to install Stronger Brushed motors...they are an extreme Pro version ( used in Heli's ) that can be installed to give the Delta Ray more power, but as is, I dare say it is great .

The wind doesn't get much more unpredictable than the North Norfolk coast in the UK. Perched on a cliff overlooking the North sea.

Blustery isn't the word!

However, as long as the strength of the gusts isn't too high (learnt from mistakes there!) the cub handles it well... And after a few minutes in the air I get a handle on the conditions and react quickly enough for it not to affect anything...

I hear what you're saying, but cant help but think that you'd be better off finding a better location to fly rather than invest in parts to cope with the site... Its never going to be a good flight site, tech or no tech.

Just my 2p worth.

I can see the field from my house....and there is No other place to go except back to the much smaller Park a little further down the road and deal with people and their pets .

This field is my own private one, no one there but me....and I will learn it's dynamics and I will fly there and with the multiple planes I have . Just I rather do things stress free...and again it appears the AS3X and SAFE system will help in that venture on such days , I want to fly my Cub and or my Delta Ray and on other days when I choose to fly something else or I can now say even at night, I will fly when the wind is not blowing or blowing very little .

I have already flown my Heli at night several times there and it pays no attention to the wind at all and now I also own a FlyBeam that is lit up like a flying neon sign, very very bright...it can be seen very well, even with my poor old eyes. Will take me a bit to get use to how it handles, but once done , the night will also be my flying time.And with it, if need be , I can use the 3 Axis Gyro set up.
