I installed STOL flaps awhile back as a project. This is all very new to me . I only have two planes i can fly reasonably well , my Champ and the SC. My P51 will be setting in the hanger for a bit. Anyway I had my friend Tommy test out the flaps for me with the camera on board, much slower with flaps of course. I made them 6.25 inches by 1.75 inches. Glad I did. Tommy has been flying nitro and just got into electrics when I did. Now I'm installing a set on his electric J3. ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMaYxjI1gdA#t=20

Excuse my ignorance but I'm new to r/c and all these acronyms can be confusing so what does STOL stand for and what do these flaps do? I take it they are not the same as ailerons?
Nice Video btw

Nice Video btw I have a Yak-12 that is STOL capable [ short takeoff and landing (STOL) ] and has Flaps Here is the product video www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnOzxqio0K0This is a real nice plane. It even has a side door that opens and shuts with a handle to install the battery see Hobby King site here hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__31670__YAK_12_Airplane_EPO_950mm_w_Flaps_RTF_Mode_2_.htmlHope that allows you to see it's ease of landing-takeoff abilities....does not need much space ( right down my ally )

Also here is a Helio Courier and Piper PA-22 planes that show the STOL ability and what Flaps can do If you notice on take-offs and landings and the slow fly-by's you can see the Flaps Down on the inner wing area that allows these planes to descend slow and use little runway to land and to take-off, plus decrease speed for those extremely slow fly by's www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0Ty6ondM1wthat is where the Flaps come in handy and some planes are far superior with STOL abilities than others. A Beaver float plane also comes to mind with great STOL ability, and what makes Bush planes so great...the short runways and or rock bars they have to use daily

Thank you for the comment on the video, and sorry I did not think of showing the full name for STOL. They do make a great difference in area required for landing. This afternoon going into a 10k head wind they made a difference of about 7 feet. On three separate attempts. The last try was mine which was awesome to do, Tommy did the two others for me. Next day out its time for measuring my take off lengths. BTW this was done on frozen snow with skies on the SC.
