Not my first post, as I had a couple of specific questions this weekend. Thanks to the beneficent board members who provided timely feedback!
My son ad I are new to the hobby, and very happy to be here.
Curious to know how many of you began flying with small(er) children, and how old they were when you did....

I started flying on my own, but my flying club has training on Tuesday evening through the summer, and we get kids as young as 7 years old

I was hoping my 7 year old son would be interested enough to want to try it. He wants to "play" the simulator, but isn't interested in the actual aircraft. More airtime for me, I guess

What I've often seen at our field is Dad using a son as an excuse to take up RC....

Based on these responses and my experience so far I think kids under 7 or 8 are just not ready yet for all but the simplest RC fixed-wing aircraft, though mine loves his mini RC Helo.
Flydiver, I think I understand what you're driving at, about dads and their boys at the field, but if you think that dads like me are "using our sons" as an excuse, you are sorely mistaken. My feeling is that the best way to get a kid interested in a hobby like this, is to let them see your genuine passion for it, and to let the hobby be a way to allow the two of you to spend good time together, no matter who does the flying. So far my son only wants to watch me fly, but he does so with a HUGE smile on his face.
Our "aircraft-eating tree incident" this weekend was a great opportunity for us to learn about crisis management and disappointment as they apply to "fun" activities (vs. work). We spent the afternoon throwing balls, sticks and whatever else we could heft at our plane (named "Firebolt" by my boy) and left empty-handed but with great big grins on our faces.
Excuse for me to fly? Yes ,please! Assuming I need an excuse!
