My old cubs nimh batteries are all dead now. I have a TON of spare parts for it, so I would like to keep it running. What will be the most cost effective way to mod an old cub using a stock motor, and electronics? Can I just prop down, remove the lvc, and use the new cub lipo and charger? I know this has surely been asked before, but a search didnt help.

Common mod a few years back. Get a 3S lipo > 1300 to fit in the box or cut the box open to fit a larger battery up to 2200. Prop down to the new stock 9x6, GWS 10x6, or APCe 10x5 (thin electric). If you don't prop down, you burn out the ESC ($50) Pull this jumper to reset the LVC: supercubclub.proboards.com/thread/988Then, don't believe it. Stop before you hit LVC as it is not good for the lipo. Over discharging lipos kills them. Get a better charger than the HZ one. Those are pretty lame. Look in the battery section as 'what charger?' has been asked about 50x.

Don't forget to change the connector on the esc/rx to match the liop's connector

Good point. The old Tamiya connector is not very good and not up to the amp capacity of the lipo. Modding the battery box for larger batteries is VERY common. You can find specifics on that in the appropriate section.

Thanks guys! This is good information. Yes, I have noted the small Tamiya terminals/connectors are poor. The terminal ends fit loosely in the connector, and that allows the terminal ends to easily deform. I am an auto-tech, and I deal with a lot of electronics issues. I will definately add better connections with an upgrade. Im not afraid to Open things up,and do some mods, but i'd like to just get it back in the air for now... So should I try to find some cheap Nmhs, to fly it for a few months, or just go with lipo? I have a while to decide on this, so it gives me time to research.

Getting harder to find NiMh batteries for the thing. Here's one source: www.cheapbatterypacks.com/Models/Parkzone-Batteries/535/Super-Cub-Batteries.aspxYou can get the 7-cell or the 8-cell custom. Get matching connectors. It is a 7 or 8-cell 2/3AA pack. 8-cell is a noticeable improvement in performance. The advantage of the lipo is it packs about 50% more power in half the weight. As you have gathered you need a special charger and a good deal more information about battery safety and care to use them safely. So, if you care to do some lipo safety homework and charger purchase homework, I'd recommend lipo. If you are feeling unprepared, go NiMh and start your education.

Oldcrow, do whatever you need to do to keep it flying. I have to admit, flying on Nimh is now nearly stone age, regarding flight. As fly points out lipos as far lighter and have far more power ( planes love diets and power far more than the Kardasians... ) I'd personally change all the connectors to deans....why? cheap, and easy to solder....be all and end all for me! Follow what fly says regarding charging and lipo care....comes to this stuff, even on RCgroups, fly is a GOD!

After all this time..I got a couple of Elite 1500 packs from CBP.com...and am VERY impressed with them! I will try to give them a little more break-in time this weekend. If you have a supercub that has been sitting around for a while, tear it down for a full inspection..lube the ends of the motor with a small amount of zoom oil, apply powdered graphite to the gearbox.

I must say well done to oldcrow for not giving in with the hobby.. some people stop flying once their cub batteries reach the end of their life and never progress forward.(I nearly did!!!) I propped down to a APC 9x6, 25C 2200 lipo, new receiver and ESC and I haven't looked back. Its like flying a brand new cub

I haven't had time to fly recently..but yeah, I'm not giving up...I discovered I am rusty at landing LOL!..I used to be really good at it. I'm gonna keep this old bird in the air as long as possible!

As long as possible.... that will be a long long while! My super cub has had harder impacts than I will ever have and is still in once piece!, I've not had the time or weather to fly at the moment - which in a way is good as its a pain when the weather is calm and you're stuck working or doing other stuff.
