What caused your Super Cub crash?
If you've crashed your Super Cub feel free to comment on this thread. Perhaps we can all learn from each other's mistakes and experiences.
Yes, after 3 months and 30 successful flights, I crashed my Super Cub a week ago. It has been down for repairs for this whole past week. The problem was that I was getting overconfident. I fly by myself. It's just me out there on my flying field. A week ago I took my camera with me to get a couple of pictures of my flying field. After a successful flight with several good landings it was time to recharge. While I was waiting out the 25 min recharge time I thought about getting a picture of my Super Cub in the air. I could hold the camera in my left hand, and the tx in my right hand. I could set the throttle to a good spot that would keep my plane in the air. After my plane was in the air for a few minutes and I thought I had everything set, I pulled the camera out of my pocket with my left hand, pointed it in the general direction of my plane and snapped the shutter a couple of times as I guided the plane into a good position. However, before I realized it my plane was no longer in a good position and I needed to turn around. My throttle setting was sufficient for my turn and my altitude was good - except I was closer to the edge of my flying field and the tree line there than I had realized. As I neared the trees I needed to give it more power, but the camera was in my left hand. I hit the trees high up, and fortunately it fell down into a lower tree, but still out of my reach. The plane was not damaged at this point. The damage came in trying to get the plane down. First, I tried to rock the plane out with the motor, but that didn't work, it only chewed up the prop needlessly. Then, I went home and got some cord and a weight and was able to snag the tailwheel with the cord, but when I pulled, it only pulled off the tailwheel and the rudder. Finally with a few more aims of the cord and weight I shagged the plane better and was able to pull the plane and branch down far enough so I could separate the plane and the branch by some swats with a rake. But I had my Super Cub back in my hands - just before It got dark. I would need to repair it, and that is a story for another thread which I will enter somewhere near this thread if anyone is interested in reading about that. SO WHAT CAUSED MY CRASH was overconfidence and my own stupidity. On the way home I thought of the Bible verse - Obadiah verse 4 "Though you soar aloft like the eagle, thence I will bring you down, says the Lord". I don't think that God brought my plane down, it was my own stupidity. But I couldn't help but think about that Bible verse anyway.
