Hello. So, a quick background on me, I have absolutely zero experience in R/C planes. About 10 years ago I was pretty serious into R/C truggies so I do have general R/C experience. That said, I have no illusions that anything other than a glossary of terms is what will transfer to the airborne side of R/C, if that. My 4 year old son has taken up a fascination with planes and becoming a pilot remains on my bucket list. I thought a neat way to satisfy both our cravings would be to venture into this world. Obviously he is far too young to do any controlling himself, but I look forward to having him help me assemble and paint a model(s) and then spending time with me flying until he himself can take the controls. My SC will be delivered tomorrow and I intend to follow the NEcubFlyer videos on YouTube to add ailerons and strengthen it up. Additionally, I plan to look into adding carbon spars as suggested. I've got an incredible amount to learn, but I look forward to getting going and being active on the forums. - Chappy

Hi Chappy, Welcome to the club! Please...don't modify your new cub just yet. Take it easy and learn to fly 3 channel first. Do the mods after you're happy with just flying it as is. Then do the upgrades. Anything else will just end up leaving you discouraged. Good luck with it, and I hope you have a lot of fun!

+1 for fly it before you do extensive mods. There are suggestions for BASIC strengthening mods that are worthwhile, tape wing leading edge, tape inside cowl, reinforce battery box and wing saddle. No mods of any sort will completely mitigate a newbie learning curve for the most part. Learn to fly > then mod it as you see fit for your needs. You'll know more by then.

Welcome to the board. Don't get to far ahead of yourself with it, as that is really easy to do in the excitement of owning a new Cub. I am new to the sport, as well and I have had to pull back a bit and take a step at a time in assembly so that I didn't get too overly caught up in the newness and ruin things by my own over enthusiasm. So far, so good for me, as reading all the threads here and at Watts and other RC sites was certainly worth the time and effort for me. I just got my new Cub on Tuesday and I still am in the process of taking one thing at a time in assembly. That may be too slow for some newbies, but it meets my needs just fine. I have no reason to believe that I too won't have crashes and near misses as I learn, but it gets me off to the right foot in learning at a pace that ensures I remain happy to be into this hobby. Great luck to you and all the other newbs as you all learn from experience and gain more as you fly.
I forgot to mention that my sister and her family all live in Avalon. Jim is retired from Chrysler and now does some part-time work at the race track and at Conseco stadium as an usher. That is a really nice job, as he gets to see all the concerts and performances all the time.

I still am in the process of taking one thing at a time in assembly. That may be too slow for some newbies, Most people open the box, charge the battery, and 15" later are picking up pieces and wondering what could have gone wrong. People generally find this site after their first disaster. Read the manual? 1. It's 'unmanly'. 2. It's semi-worthless. 3. It would postpone that fist crash 15 minutes. You are the most detailed person that has entered this forum I think. You ask questions I haven't ever seen I thought I'd seen them all, some of them so often I get cross eyed.

Amen to all that has been said here. In particular, don't start cutting out ailerons yet!

Wow, thanks for all the quick replies. Based on your replies and those at some other boards, I decided to fight the urge to tinker (mod, in this case) until I get the flying part down. Oh, and FlyDiver, I'm definitely "unmanly" and "mostly-worthless", but I take unhealthy joy in reading my manuals. In fact, the plane and radio aren't even here yet and I've already downloaded and read the manuals.
Yes, I'm just that dorky.

Chappy. Are you flying solo, or do you have some experienced help at hand?

Solo for now. We have a couple very healthy clubs nearby so I plan to visit them soon.

Do the clubs first, before any solo flights. I do keep banging on about it, but solo flight ( Start of interest in the hobby to actual solo flight) took me ( on and off) 22 years! If I'd had a club nearby at the time, I'd have been flying solo in three months ( and a lot less money spent, as well!) Even if you do want to go solo, go say hello. If they are decent types, they may even check your SC out for you, to make sure it is correctly set-up. If they're knob-jockeys who just whinge on about membership, say thank you, and drive away. No loss to you.

Just to make a point i started of with a Hobbyzone champ on my own. 1st flight hit hedge 3rd flight snapped wing in half, fixed with gorilla glue, been ok since. Flying the champ prepared me for flying the cub on my own. Only 1 minor crash and lot of nose overs on landing but 25 batteries in and doing ok. Also used android app of Absolute rc plane sim helped with orientation. Hope this helps and happy flying.

Hi Chappy,
Also from Indy and would like to swap Intel on good flight fields in the area. I will be flying from Southwest Park this Sunday if the weatherman didn't lie and the flight spirits and star allignment are all in agreement.
I figure I can fly all afternoon with 1 battery charging and the other flying. I'll be dropping streamers and chutes with the x-port drop module and getting some in flight video.
Let me know if you would like to fly formation, or maybe some future sonic combat. I am also looking at getting the night flight module. Gotta love the versatility of the HZ Super Cub!

Ok, so the weather prediction for Sunday was a little off, but Today looks great, 0-5 mph wind and sunny in the 40's. I'll be flying the Cub and Champ at SW Park this afternoon.
Should have some video to post hopefully.
