Last Night of the Proms! OH, YES!

Oh Wow, do I love this. So does Lady CH. Forget the Olympic opening/closing ceremonies, they pale into insignificance compared to the last night of the Proms! Fabulous music, played by people that are so talented that it is beyond my comprehension, but give so much pleasure to so many other ordinary people like myself. I and Lady CH are often reduced to tears of emotion just having the privilege of listening to music of such quality.

Elgar, Land of Hope and Glory, (when WILL that become our national anthem instead of the dreary dirge that is God save the Queen) and Jerusalem, absolute magic! I tell you, Land of Hope and Glory is such a magnificent and inspiring piece of music, you could make me go to war for you on that, (anyone that really knows me also knows how peaceful I am) but God save the Queen? No, I would just turn around and go back to bed!

However,..... read on dear reader, if you would be so kind.......

Classical music has stood the test of time and will always do so. Why? Because it is created by the best composers that have ever existed in the world, played by the best musicians in the world and sung by the best singers in the world.

I ask you this, compare a modern piece of crap called rap, (does that stand for repetitive, antagonistic, puke?) Oh yes, I believe you are with me there, dear reader, to the music of Beethoven or Berlioz. These today’s pathetic "wannabes" (apologies, modern word, forgive me, Mr. Walsh) have no talent, no voice and can not, nor will be anything other than a manufactured studio rendition of what ? Yes, you have guessed it crap.

Of course, there are some of you that might readily disagree. It is not your fault. It is because you have not been exposed to the true majesty of real music, live orchestras, opera at its best, (try La Boheme, it always makes me cry) it is one of the most famous and best love stories in the world.

My goodness, my Lord CH! An almost never ending silence, and then an absolute surfeit of morning musings! I must profess myself to be a bit of a musical sleeper, I'm afraid. I have witnessed the absolute delight that comes from listening to Placido Domingo, Hose Carreras, and of course, Luciano Pavarotti...pure eye watering bliss! Mozart's 'eine kliene nachmusik', and Samuel Barbers 'Adagio for strings'.....However...I also like Punk, Heavy metal, Reggae, Certain pieces of Rap, Dance, and the odd piece of pop music ( Titanium springs to mind.) I don't know whats out in the world at the moment, but I know what I like!

Ah, Dear Toff,

Lately I have been so flipping busy with sorting flights, accommodation, car hire, etc, for our upcoming tour and inspection of our colonies down under. The servants have no idea what to pack, but I have all I need with a pair of shorts, sunnies, a t shirt and swimming /snorkelling gear. also a huge suitcase full of falling down fluid as it is rather expensive in the antipodean areas unless one has a still. The marmite jars are already encased in bubble wrap and security containers as we don't want them to get into the wrong hands.

Music wise, I also love Paul Carrack, blues,Jimi Hendrix, some reggae. as for your like of titanium, I have a titanium screw in my hand at the moment, does that make me a fan? Personally I have never heard of them so you have gone up in my estimations (as if you could get any higher) as a very aware old chap.

Tonight then, the last night of the proms, it will celebrate my Mum's birthday, she would have been 95! But she looks upon us from Heaven and will surely have a smile on her face. Good on yer Mum, as the Aussies would say.

Less than two hours and it is on! Marmite sandwiches have been prepared by the servants, also cucumber ones to calm me down. The Merlot is at room temperature, as is the Grenache, spot on!

CH, 'Land of Hope and Glory' will never become our national anthem so long as the PC brigade hold sway. They cannot abide the line 'wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set', because it was written during our time of colonial expansion (bringing the benefits of our culture to less fortunate parts of the globe in return for plundering their wealth . . . ). And as you will know, to their warped minds our nation should be ashamed of its past.

Yes, I too hope to be in front of the goggle box tonight, a glass of Scotch in one hand and my little union flag in t'other. My youthful ambition was to be there in person one day but I fear that will never come to pass now - besides which, I doubt if I could stand for the duration! Final thought - no one conducted the audience quite like dear old Malcolm Sargent, many many moons ago.

Ah, my friends,

How disappointed we were. Lady CH,myself and the servants thought that it was a pathetic shadow of what should have been. Thank goodness for Nigel Kennedy taking the mickey out of that awful female "conductor". We thought that she might have been better employed in a different decade on a bus, taking fares. A real conductor. She looked like she was auditioning for a planet of the apes remake, no make up necessary. IOHO. As for making it a platform to give a sermon on women and their supposed suppression in music, even our chambermaid thought it was "well out of order" in the modern parlance.

It was as much fun as sucking a lemon soaked in chilli oil and bleach. That dreadful woman that kept on coming back to sing, good grief, we thought that the makeup applied must have kept suppliers shares buoyant to say the least. As for her false eyelashes, we thought she might have a moonlighting job sweeping the stage after all had gone.

We all loved the way Nigel Kennedy burst that dreadful pink balloon. Said it all with a stab of his bow, continued playing and winding up the "conductor". The servants burst out in spontaneous applause. I have given them all another ten minutes added to their luncheon break tomorrow, I know that might be reckless but I am a generous chap after all.

Let us get back to the good days of the last night, get rid of these feminists and their PC views. Come on England, grow some balls and backbone.

If any offence has been caused to anyone because of this post, then "job done", as my gardeners say.
