After a beautiful gorgeous week of weather and many things needing done, and dreaming of the moment
I would maiden my Cub for the first time.
After watching and trekking to the Park to see it filled with people walking it's trail and walking their dogs
Morning, noon and evening every time that seemed perfect, was always something, that stopped the plan.
Yes I flew my Champ in the midst of the people, but was weary of flying the Cub.
One thing or another kept arising...so my plan was waking early, getting up and going before dawn and getting prepared
and give her the Maiden flight.Very Foggy and waited for it to clear some, but also knowing if it did people would
be in the Park. I went on anyway.
This morning, very cool, damp and very foggy, I ventured out and with No one around I sent the Cub out by hand latching her
she went across rose slightly and she was off and circle and circle within the small confined Park which was even smaller
with the dense Fog....
To say the least this Cub is not slow, she covers allot of space in a hurry , Having to shorten the field even more than
it actually is due to the Dense Fog and placing myself in an unusual position ( not my normal place I fly the Champ) on the
opposite side of the field .....( there is where I believe the issue started)...she dipped in the turns harshly and as I knew to
add up elevator to keep her level, but trying to keep her slow, the nose dip is worse, once so bad it dipped so fast ( one because
of flying very low in the Fog ) she came down hard..had time to pull up and hit the wheels and which of course resulted in a nose
over in the grass.
Checked her out, other than a little dirt on her nose, no problems at all.Checked controls surfaces and sent her off again .
Anything above half throttle she is fast , at half or less, she dips hard in turns, trying to keep her in sight in the Fog and not allowing
her to get high and trying to avoid the tree's I know are there but can hardly see, I keep her in a to tight of a circle ( my opinion)
Could not get allot of altitude and in that Park one can't anyway , but dense Fog multiplied that worry and fear..and the tree's I knew were
there but could not see clearly. So my judging distance was screwed from the beginning so My turn was about middle ways of the field on one side
and further and closer to the buildings on the other ( which is where I stood this morning) The walking path comes down that side, my thought
when I need to bring her in , the walking path perfect runway...my thought anyway) placing myself in that position, limited me from seeing
clearly one side of the field one due to Fog and the odd angle inhibited my view and my judging how far I could go down before turning, caused me to
turn faster and shorter than normal...which at the angle bought the Cub closer to me and almost over my head....coming back up the field to where
I could see clearer, but it also bought it closer to the buildings just a few feet away over my right shoulder .
Flew for about 5 minutes, ( battery alarm would not fit in battery box with battery) , so trying to time my flights with my watch and wanting to
turn her Land her on the asphalt walking path when the time come , kept me making that ever closer circle and ever closer to the buildings edge.
The last turn bought her to close, and I rose her up and thought in a second I would turn her over the building, turning right, instead of left this
time and allow her to come over my head and I would just spin around as it came across..Bad decision.
Instead of turning Left like I had been doing, I rose her up and was trying to make that right hard turn, ( no wind at all blowing Very calm )
but she acted as if she had hit a gust or something...just as I turned, she banked slightly right and then she turned straight back to level, and within
a few seconds over the building into the line of Large Pines .
That was her First flight and my bad decisions while doing it.
Needless to say , had to go home, get a ladder and a extension pole, still to high.Duct taped garden hoe to end of extension and climbed as High as
I could, of course being out on limbs the higher I climbed the Ladder the further away it took me from the Cub. Took me a little while but I manage to
push it hard enough to dislodge her and down she came .Nose first then she turned over on her back and landed rather easy.
Upon examination, other than two or three little cuts in the Cowl, there is no damage at all .
Needless to say this morning started out with mistakes. First flying in Fog, standing in a bad position and not being patient and making bad decisions.
She flew fairly nice, when she was flying straight.
Someone said flying the Cub would be docile, since I flew the Champ allot and it was small and twitchy. The Champ almost flies itself and if windy
it can become a handful, but even with that it handles nice and the size gives one time to correct and she is very slow.
This Super Cub, flies allot faster and seems in flight to be heavy. It was like throwing around a rock at times. Level it can be smooth and climbs and descends
easy enough, but in turns it dips hard and fast and it is a struggle ( but again I was flying in limited space and limited altitude )
I set CG and it is level . I used stock everything including the Transmitter.
When I said like a rock, it is heavy feeling. ( of course I am use to the Champ which is so light) but even on the Sim I assumed the Cub would be close
to that floating flight and that simply is not the case at all. Altitude may change that, but where I fly altitude is not something I can attain like many can
on flight fields. I have no true open space to do that. The Tree line is every where, plus an Interstate on one side beyond tree's and on the other side a highway and across the highway , houses .
So the Park is like a an oblong Bowl...egg shaped. Wider on one end than the other .Many obstacles so keeping your plane in that area is challenging , but can be
done I believe, in better conditions. Just was not prepared for the speed and heavy feel the Cub has.
Next Time I will know not to stand on that side of the field and not fly in Dense Fog...even if it was lifting, it limited my already limited space.
Believe had I been when i normally stand most all of this would have been avoided for the most part.
The Cub surprised me in it's power and again in it's heavy feel. Was not the floating Plane I figured it was. ( Again altitude was / is an issue )
But all in all I had a good time, learned allot and will give her another go but in a different way, and try not to make the same mistakes.
So that is what occurred , Once upon a Foggy Morn.
