I'm a pretty quick runner these days, so no worry. After 31 years with my wife, I am also pretty good at ducking for cover. However, I still have to sleep with one eye open on some nights. :-)

Yes, dear Toffers, The servants are quite basic in their requirements when not carrying out their duties on the estate, floggings are an everyday happening due to the lack of discipline within their concerns/duties. I must make an entry in my diary if you will forgive the dreadful phrase.

Do you have a spare room at your country abode!?? I would be quite willing to come and instil -ahem- 'discipline' amongst any of the reclarient ( especially if they are comely!) serving wenches on your harem, staff.

Ah, Toffers old chap, Would that we could help you. Alas, all the spare rooms are full to the brim with jars of MARMITE and sealed containers of Earl Grey tea. These are jealously guarded by, quite rightly, comely wenches. If the male staff are tempted to try and partake of the MARMITE or tea, they will of course become sidetracked by the carefully chosen wenches.

Just had a wonderful luncheon of three toasted crumpets, buttered and thinly spread over with MARMITE, upon which were placed thin slivers of cucumber. Together with a cup of Earl Grey tea, ruddy marvellous!

Ian, How good to hear from you again! I did say that it was for luncheon, a time when tea would be imbibed old chap. Perhaps coffee is more to your taste as it is mine, at the appropriate time of course. However, the beans must be harvested from our small but tasteful (if you will forgive the pun) plantation overseas. They are then transported to our humble abode and carefully ground to the correct size by one of our most trusted servants. He took an evening class in the subject at college. He passed with flying colours which I attribute solely to my allowing him a MARMITE sandwich for his refreshment each day. So, when I think about it, his success is all down to me really. As for MARMITE keeping things progressing, it is of course the only thing to put on one's crumpet. I mean the ones that cook makes, not the crumpet that might spring to Toff's mind of course!

It is amazing how picky I am when it comes to tea. I love a good cup of green tea, yet find myself reaching for the coffee almost every morning. I do tend to enjoy natural teas like Labrador tea which is a plant that grows wild in Alaska. Though I never envisioned myself picking wild plants and making tea, I also never thought that -40 could be considered a high for the day. When I head to Hawaii in March I need to pick up some Kona coffee from the Koa Coffee Co. and send you off a half pound or something to that effect. I have always been a fan of Kona coffee, yet it can run 20 dollars for a half a pound when purchased from outside Hawaii. Perhaps if everyone experienced a little culture and cuisine from around the planet that would solve all the worlds problems?

As a fellow Englishman to CH, I find it amusing that you should ask such a question. Of course we all have servants over here! The number depends upon the size of one's estate, including the acreage of one's grouse moor (good gamekeepers are difficult to find nowadays). To be honest, the majority of us prefer not to discuss staffing matters. It is considered rather infra dig in the best circles. However, allowances are made for the truly English eccentrics, like CH, recognising that their little idiosyncrasies usually result from generations of in-breeding. Surely you have servants over there - perhaps only a scullery maid to keep the house clean?
