Welcome! I suggest you get together with your buddy again and have him take it up high and hand you the controls for a couple flights at least. Better yet would be if the controls can be buddy boxed would be to do that for a few flights until you get the hang of it. Going it alone is certainly possible but the price in damage is significantly higher and the added cost in waiting for replacement parts is frustrating. Do some reading, this is a common occurrence.
The first few seconds of a new plane's life are the most critical and dangerous, especially with a new flier at the controls.

I live in Delaware County but I work in Malvern. I fly a lot at Wilson Farm Park in Chesterbrook.
