Hi. I have been into rc car for about 6 years now but i now find myself entering the plane world. I recently traded about $30 worth of Rc car electronics for a super cub. I have flown it once so far and I'm looking to learn on it and upgrade it. I look forward to the new hobby.

Welcome. I too have only been at this hobby for a few weeks, and can tell you that you've come to the right place. There's a wealth of information on this site and some very kind folk who are generous with their time, guiding us newbies through the first few weeks and months.
Hope you have fun....

Welcome on board dude.. as sdg says, this is the place for all things SC..
check out this forum and youtube for easy and must-do mods on the SC.. 11.1v lipo is always good if yours is the red/white EP cub, if you have the blue/white LP cub, brushless is the next step i guess... but hey learn to fly the darn thing before you start throwing cash around upgrading it...most of your early cost will be in repairs sadly!! lol!! ENJOY...

Lol yeah I currently have 1 complete flight done. I flew the entire length of the battery pack than then did a gentle crash Landon into the weeds. The whole time I felt like the battery should have had more power. It was all I could do to get around 50 feet in the air. I did re adjust my elevator servo horn but it still didn't have enough power to hand launch. Since I got it used in a trade, I think the battery may have sat for a long time. On the charger I can only get about 800mah into the battery. When I charge my 5000mah lipos for my cars, they get the full 5000mah.
If I'm going to get new batteries, I'm going to upgrade to lipo. Since I have the red and white version, will I need a new esc that can handle 3s lipos or can I just get an external lvc and run the current esc?

There's a jumper you can pull to set the LVC to be more lipo friendly. supercubclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ts&action=display&thread=988I do not recommend you fly to LVC, the setting is too low and it'll slowly destroy the lipo. The ESC was never designed for the load 3S puts on. It gets by.....barely. You also need to prop down to the new 'stock' 9x6 or a GWS 10x6. The old 10x8 is likely to fry the ESC if you push it too hard. If you are still using OLD NiMh they are bound to be WAY lame. I'm surprised they work at all.

Okay I remember when I first got the plane that jumper was missing. It caused my motor to die over half throttled. I made my own jumper out of the Plug for the ATC since I didn't want to use it anyway.

Hi s7.. I agree with flydiver, if they are the old/original cells it will be worth posting them in the trash..lol..
As for the lipo Question. 11.1v(3cell)is plenty power and you may indeed argue too much power! The SC is supposed to be a sedate flyer so that us new flyers(crashers..)don't get carried away!!
One thing with the SC IMO is the effect that a decent headwind will have...you may find that to make any headway on a stiff breeze you will need WOT(wide open throttle) just to stay still..! if so, land(!)and go home until the wind drops..!
I have not pulled the LVC(low voltage cut-out..)on my SC, but I have a lipo alarm fitted to protect the pack.. these are available at a very reasonable price on a famous online auction site and are worth their weight in gold.. they detect when the pack reaches a low level and emits an annoying beep-beep to let you know it is time to land and change the pack...
Flydiver is spot-on(and he has a lot of experience, so take heed..)with the prop suggestion, the SC lp version comes with a 9x6 prop as a factory fit so opt for that or maybe a GWS 10x6 DD(direct drive)if you go 11.1v.. the GWS 10x6 will need the hole opening out to fit the stock prop shaft, but it is an easy job... try a 2cell lipo if you have one laying around as it is a good compromise from the stock nimh pack due to less weight but comparative voltage...
So, keep on popping back and go get some air-time with your SC..

i got my lipos and im on my way. got 40min of flight time out of 2 packs (i bought 3 for me and 3 for my father for his birthday). i got some cheapo 10x6 props since ill likely go through a lot of them and i did break 2 on my first flight. i love the power of the lipo. i did many touch and gos and did a lot of perfect landings

What is a stiff breeze in mph? Anything you can't fly in.... ;D Seriously, depends mostly on the plane AND the pilot. The Champ will blow away in a small breeze the Cub handles fine. A newbie will lose his plane in a wind that an experienced pilot might have fun flying in. In this forum, anything over 5mph should be avoided while learning, over 10mph most of the time, and over 15mph you best have your game on. If you fly in over 20mph you know who you are and don't need to read posts like this. A known weak spot in the Cub is a break spot right in front of the tail feathers. Trying to land in too much wind catches a wing tip > cartwheels > breaks the whole tail right off.

Yep, your buttocks really clench when she is way up there, being pushed slowly backwards away from you, as your motor struggles to battle the wind and bring her back to daddy. Bin there, done that! Not a nice experience. Seriously, folks - heed the advice and do NOT push your luck in unsuitable wind. Your baby can be blown away, never to be seen again.

Yep had a day like that before.
We had a old saying when we were still skydiving about the wind. "Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than to be in the air wishing you were on the ground."
