Brad,
You are in good company. Renard, Flydiver and the rest of the gang here are off-the-hook when it comes to tips and knowledge. But with that said, don't be too overly cautious. The best thing I've learned is to get your SC at a high altitude to compensate for mistakes. As a newbie myself, I assumed that flying low in the beginning is the way to go. Boy, was I wrong. As one member here said, "Fly your SC about 3 mistakes high." Enjoy. You'll be addicted.
