I have two Supercubs and love them, but hate the rubber band wing attachment. Anyone have a fix?

I've heard of someone using magnets, but I don't know how good it works

You could use magnets, never tried it, but new plane from hobbyzone comes retail like that (Firebird Stratos). But personnaly I would be very worry of doing my first loop with magnets!!! But since there is some wing struts, should be able to keep in place.

Seems like an awful lot of effort for very little return! I can't think of a faster or more convenient way of fixing the wing than the rubber bands. The pros far outweigh the cons!

Yes. Plus when you dink a wing on landing, or taking off, it can move and absorb the shock. It does mess up the wing saddle, hence all the wing saddle reinforcement mods. You dink a fixed wing hard and you end up ripping out all kinds of stuff > major fix! I've got a balsa Sig Rascal I've done that to 2x and it's really disheartening and a pain to fix. The same kind of hit in a stock SC would be trivial.
If you are still at the stage that you are hitting your wings AT ALL, I don't recommend a fixed wing. But that's always your call.

Hi Flydiver. I just had a look at that thread and it looked like quite a good mod until I saw the photo of the two lolly sticks epoxied to the wing. YUK!!!!! If that was the best I could do then I would give up.

Not very elegant but would look to be simple and probably effective. In addition it could be a tear-away spot in a crash and possibly repairable. There's something said for simple solutions. Besides, you don't see it when mounted.
The system on my other plane is conceptually similar. 2 Small rods poke out of the front of the wing. They mate with a plastic piece with mated holes mounted in the fuse. There is a similar hold down screw in the back of the wing. You could use some carbon rods inserted into the wing, nibs sticking out maybe 1/4", and glue on a mating stick with holes in the wing saddle. Positioning is critical. Look better if done right, work the same, probably tear out the saddle mount if the wing goes in. That's what mine does, on balsa....while destroying the entire pilot windshield pillar. It's not very sturdy, OTOH when it cartwheels off the wing not much would actually hold up.

I got some elastic type string and knotted together with a reef knot and made my own bands.

I would think that any real crash at all, where the plane hits and spins to the side on a wing, would probably rip out much more with the mod addressed on the link. I may be completely wrong in that regard, but it just seems that the rubber bands cushion when such happens and that is it not just about holding the wings in place or looking more aesthetic, but also flexing when necessary. It is a skillful mod and took some thought, but the more simplistic rubber band solution just seems to be the more effective solution to me. I was wondering if a small piece of packing tape at the rear wing area, where the band pulls over the trailing edge of the wing, would be a good thing to do? Seems like the stress and constant rub or pull by the rubber band there could ultimately deform or crush into the foam of the wing at that very spot...

Coupes, yes packing tape or duct tape is a good idea in that area. In fact, I have always put a layer of tape from the leading edge to the trailing edge over the center of all my wings. I go a little overkill perhaps and cover from about 1/2" past the edge of the plastic pieces. After a few rough cartwheel type landings (my specialty I might add) it's not unusual for the rubber bands to make a nasty groove on the trailing edges.
Speaking of rubber bands, but I am surprised to have not heard any feedback on my $0.67 bag of #32 bands at most local Walmart super center stores, I found mine in the office supplies area.

I have to go to Wally World tomorrow, so I'll be looking there for sure. Office Depot often has more selection in the way of rubber bands here, I have never specifically looked for #32 ones before. I have simply bought packages of various sizes that were mixed. They work great on many of the DIY camera mounts that I use. I am hoping to find the best price at WalMart for a table to work on my plane when it arrives. My other table in my office is loaded to the gills with camera mounts, cameras and general junk. I am usually not a pack rat in the least, but lately my camera stuff has been piling up on my one table. :-)
