I have an OPTO 40A esc, but no Ubec to hand. Could I use a burnt out 30A esc as a BEC? The throttle function is dead, but still controls servos fine - 3 sevos tested for over 10 mins of stick wiggling with no issues. So I presume the bec portion of this ESC is still functional.

I supposed it theoretically could work. Question is, want to trust your plane to a BEC that has sat next to an ESC that burned up? You sure there was no collateral damage? You are betting your plane on it.

A confirmed functional Bec is cheaper then a plane.

Well, I've now been running this cheapo method in my now converted twinjet - so far works fine. The plane is now a monojet, with a 3200kv pusher & 5x5 prop. It's a bit fast!

Haha to the naysayers say I! Up and down like a zoomy thing today! And everything cool cool cool! Perfect control, no hiccups at all! (I do have a proper Ubec on order though, this was only a temporary solution to see if it could be done, and, it does work!) Disclaimer: I'm using a multiplex twinjet as a test platform as A) it's pretty much unbreakable, and when it does, CA and tape fixes it, and B) It flies beautifully no matter what power system is in it - case in point- I had 2 3600KV inrunners in it before with stock gunther props. Lost power to one motor due to loose connection - trimmed in flight to compensate, and still flew on one motor! This is a well thought out plane!

Haaaaaaa! Still using it! Out this morning ( typical - beautiful all week at work, have day off - Windy and miserable!), anyway, fast zoomy, but now I'm used to it, not that zoomy . Until....Haha! 4 cell heaven! 1 twin jet, 1 3200Kv motor, 1 5x5 prop, and 1 14.8v lipo= Zoooooom!!!!And I'm still using the burnt out esc. No worries!

I'm going to guess the 'cheapy' was only designed for 3S in the first place. The UBEC probably can (hopefully) handle the 4S. If it was not designed for it I'm now going to get a helmet.
