The best choices (Motors, mounts, ESC, prop, rx,..

Hi guys,

I need to upgrade to brushless but I'm really new to this hobby and have no clue about the way to choose the more appropriate motor/esc/rx/motor mount/prop./programming card/...

I've read a lot of threads that mention a Turnigy motor called 35-36C wich seems perfect but difficult to find and usually out of stock at HobbyKing.
There are a lot of alternatives but how to know if it's suitable to the Super Cub?

My idea is to summarize in a single thread all the alternative motors with their picture and specs. I could then modify this single topic with your help to get a really user friendly guide of the optional motors and other related stuff.

This post will contain some of the best parts you can buy for your cub. I know that you all posted tons of info about motors which are not summarized in a single thread and contain no picture or links to shops like hobbyking wich is a good reference for both US an Europe.

Everyone that owns a brushless motor for his Super Cub is invited to share his experience. Please always give the brand of your motor and a link to find more info on it.

Can you explain me the difference between these two motors?
I need to make my cub climbing fast even with a 2200Mah lipo? I don't need my SC to climb verticaly but I plan to attach also my 140g camera.
You said that with the Park480 a 8-9 inch prop is ok, thus can I keep my stock prop (9x6)?
Which other props are suitable to each of these motors?

Will this motor mount fit with one of those motors? (I prefer to buy from HobbyKing because of the shipping cost to Belgium)

I can't answer many of your questions, as I'm new to this hobby too, but I can tell you what I've done to my cub and give you my thoughts.

I am currently using an APC 9x6E prop, but will try the APC 10x5E soon. These mods made the Cub quite lively, even if she is a bit tail heavy, nothing that can't be corrected with a little down trim though. Later, I modified the wing loosely as described here: secure.hobbyzone.com/itemmultimedia/HZ/HBZ7380/SuperCubLPUpgradeInstructions.pdf and upgraded the RX to an AR6210 to allow for the use of flaperons. I am still using the 1300/1350 battery, and flight times are still about 10 to 15 minuets, but then again, I rarely use full throttle. Level flight is easily maintained with less than half throttle, and I do glide a bit.

Hopefully this will be of some help to someone, I think Ben has a good idea here, I know I did my fair share of hair pulling deciding what I needed.

                                 This is what Dan at Hobby Zone suggests. Total package approximately $150.00. Vertical climbs, pulls up out of inverted flight, full power take offs in a couple of feet, longer flight times when I can stay out of the throttle. Yes it cost almost what another plane woul cost but it is like getting another plane. Aileron mods may be next.

A good set-up for the HZ Super Cub is:

450 Sport (includes 4mm prop adapter)
32A Power Up ESC (I used a spare E-flite 30A I had)
GWS 1060 prop
(2) TP SG90 Servo (typical 9g micro servo)
Supercub motor mount they sell
I use 3S lipos from 1550-2200mah 20-25C

Shipping is wicked cheap as well from headsuprc. I think like 2.00 and I had everything in a couple of days.

Then I sold all my stock electronics for 60.00, so I pretty much broke even.

He could not anyway. The stock RX/ESC is BRUSHED. He's gone brushless. You go brushless, you have to swap out the ESC and RX.

The ESC part of the combo stock receiver is for a brushed motor, but it also has what looks like a standard 3-pin throttle control connector. Can't you just leave the motor power wires disconnected and connect a brushless ESC to the "thro" connector?

Corrected: That may work OK since you are just trying to use the RX portion, not the ESC.
I read your intention wrongly at first-thought you were trying to use the brushed ESC as a brushless. THAT won't work, see original info below.

Most folks swap out everything once they switch over to brushless. You might be able to do what you are thinking. No personal experience. Toff just did something like this by using the BEC portion of a burned out ESC on an OPTO ESC (no BEC). It worked.

The rest of this is true for a full swap out so I'm leaving it.
If you try the experiment let us know.

You cannot use a brushed ESC as a Brushless.
Brushed ESC and brushless ESC are totally different electronic devices.
You got one, or the other but are not interchangeable.

The BRUSHES control the motor in the stock Cub.
For a BUSHLESS motor the ESC does the job the brushes normally do to control the motor operation.

This is the conundrum folks almost never see when they are getting into the sport. The Cub is loaded with proprietary electronics. They work but they are neither great nor transferable. Mostly you need to dump them and move on. It's part of the learning experience.

I know how you can find out That's what I would do rather do than take advice from someone that's probably never tried it.

Thanks, guys. I'm afraid I'll have to leave the experimentation to someone else, though. Due to a recent uh, "landing", I'm going to have to replace both the fuselage and RX anyway. I think the servos and rear end are salvageable. I guess this is my excuse to go brushless w/ a new RX.

Hey guys. I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I can't find it.
Is it possible to convert the SC to brushless by putting an inrunner motor in the stock motor mount? The ESC and RX are not a problem for me. I can do that with no problem. I don't want to put too much into the conversion. I am only a part time flyer. I spend most of my time and money on surface R/C.

Not if you want to keep it cheap. An inrunner is brushless so you have to convert the ESC. It seems possible that you can retain the current ESC/RX if you are Spetrum, plug a new ESC into the RX throttle channel. You just cap the brushed motor wires.
You would have to make sure the inrunner pinion mates up properly with the current setup and is kind of in the same KV dept. Inrunners tend to be as or more expensive than outrunners.

Short story, doubt you'd save any money with that conversion.
Unless you go the whole conversion the stock power plant isn't all that bad and you can't beat the price.
