the DX6i is all you need with the BNF NO need to buy a RX. I have the DX6i and works great as far as range gos you can fly it as far as you can see it. on youtube there is people flying over 2000 feet high the DX6i is a d**n good radio well worth the money $159.00. just make sure you buy from a well known hobby shop. watch out buying on amazon or EBAY there are some going for $299.99 plus shipping RIP off. hobby zone or horizon hobby are very good.

What sort of range can be expected using a DX6i with the BNF version which has a DSM2 compatible receiver?

It seems a good kilometre can be expected. I'm sure there was a youtube vid where some guy had his SC 2.5km up, i mean completely out of sight with an altimeter on board!?!

Since its a BNF plane, all you need is the transmitter. A DSM2 reciever is included with the Cub LP Bnf.

Thanks toff, I already have the setup described but would like to get some feedback as to the potential range because at the moment its a case of being very cautious and flying in close proximity

Depends on the RX. If its an AR500/ 600/ 6200/6210, your eyesight is the only limit. Having said that, my Cub has an AR6100 installed ( which is classed as a 'park-flyer' RX), and I can fly until it's nearly a dot, and still have full control! Just found out that the RX on the BNF version is an all in one ESC/ 2.4 ghz RX unit. However, reading up on the specs, it does need to be partnered to a full range transmitter, which makes me believe that it's a full range RX, So dot in the sky time for you! In keeping with horizon hobbies policy of not giving a distance, no one seems to have done the test on this, but nearly all the reviews on the HZ website are good (94%), and none mention lost planes! However....Hmmm, $200 listed as the price for the BNF version? Ooooo. I converted my old 27Mhz version for a lot less than that, and that includes the price of the plane , and the fact I'm in the UK! ( Cos I'm cheep! )
