There seems to be an abiding concern about burning up a STOCK cub motor. I'm wondering if anyone actually has? I DO NOT mean, crashed, bent, bound up the gearbox shaft because you assembled it wrong or other pilot screw up. There are lots of ways to mess it up that are not plain old smoking it.
I also do not mean just plain old WORE it out after a hoard of flights. 3S is harder on it than the NiMh is was designed for, especially if you are pushing the prop size and are fortunate to have one of the ESC that don't burn up.
I think that motor is pretty rugged. In total stock trim I don't think you CAN smoke it. You absolutely will take out the 'fragile' ESC first. It seems like 10% of those things go just by firing it up or 2 seconds of not turning off the throttle on a crash or nose-over.
If you upgrade to a new TX/RX and MUCH larger brushed ESC (> 20A) then maybe, just maybe you can seriously over prop it and smoke it. If you prop it correctly you can actually run it off 4S (don't try this unless you KNOW what you are doing). Current kills, not voltage so much.

Nope. I did wear mine out after quite a few flights. That was with the 20c-30c 2200mah zippys and a 35A esc. Totally wore out the brushes, but while it worked, it worked really well!

If YOU can't burn it out, I'm don't think anyone can.
People are all hot to dump this motor and get a brushless when actually it works pretty well. The problem is often the brushless ESC. Not too many good ones out there.

Actually i have. well two actually. the first one was kind of burnt out but what actually happened was the main o ring on the front of the motor that holds the shaft in place wore away and so the internal magnets were grinded against the internal metal shaft and it burnt up the lubrication and the motor would get so hot it would not run , but funnily if i let it cool, it would be fine, however seeing as the o ring cant really be replaced well, yea burnt up.
The second was an older super cub but with newer li-po batteries of the super cub LP powering it and it just burnt out, i assume due to it running a bigger prop.

I put a brushed ESC in mine and used it for a long time. I had a hard landing and forgot to turn off the throttle and smoked the ESC and the motor didn't work anymore, so I ended up buying a brushless set-up. I really wanted to get a more efficient/powerful motor anyway, just for the sake of learning a little bit about them.
I never liked the noise of the geared motor, but I don't really love the silence of the brushless motor either.
