Anyone add/run flaps without ailerons? I've come to the conclusion that I don't think flaperons are a good idea (besides the difference in lift from side to side, I think that full length flaps tend to result in stability issues) and more than anything I want to experiment with changing the lift without adding more weight than I have to.
Anyone try this or have any thoughts about it?

I can tell you in a few days when I maiden my Cub with wing straightened, flaps and ailerons, by disconnecting the ailerons......... mmmmmmm doe not a good idea no dihedral!!!!! It was worth the thought though lol Shes ready to go just got to set the thoroughs on control surfaces and set the COG, she's weighing in at 29 oz ;D I'l take loads of pics before the first flight just in case

cubcruncher, unless you want your cub to go crunch again I wouldn't recommend flying without ailerons with a flat wing, you need the dihedral to keep the plane upright. If you want, maybe you could set up a dual rate with the ailerons set to zero, that way you can try flying it without the ailerons, but if you need them back you just have to flip a switch.
As for putting flaps in a plane but not ailerons, sure you can give it a go, but if you're going to put flaps in it, it's just as much work for you to install ailerons as well. Why would you want to install flaps but not ailerons?
You are correct that full length flaps cause stability issues, they tend to promote tip-stalls, but if you have flaps on the inside on the wings then it's not a problem. The cub is prob experimented with more than most other RC planes. If you really want flaps with no ailerons then I say go for it.

Why? Because I'd like to try to get the weight down to around 20-22oz, and I don't really think I can do it with the stock wing, flaps and ailerons. I have wondered if you could make a built up wing significantly lighter than the stock one, but at that point, I'm not sure that there is a reason to do that without just building the whole plane from scratch.
And yea, i agree, no ailerons without dihedral may be frightening. Typically on a high wing plane if you can get the center of mass low enough in the body (far enough below the wing) you can make it work with minimal dihedral, but I'm not sure that the SC has it's weight low enough in the body to be stable that way.

I have flaps and ailerons on mine, and the heaviest components would be the 4 servos at 9g each. The pushrods and control horns weigh next to nothing, so overall it's going to add about one and a quarter oz to the plane

Dillzio, do you have pics of your setup or a build thread (I know I've searched a bunch but I'm not sure if I've seen yours yet)?
