I have been taking my sweet time with my brushless build of N1016R. I was going back and forth on what to do and how to do it with my limited knowledge of electric R/C. This is where I am now. If any one see's something wrong please let me know. Turnigy 35-30 SK Brushless RC Custom motor mount MAS 10x6 electric - This may change depending on performance. Its awsome on the stock motor though Grayson Hobby 30A ESC w/ BEC 9g servos 3s 2200M 25C zippys 3" trexlers 1 1/2" tail wheel The paint is on and the servo's installed. Battery box mod is complete. I hung the motor and I have to say that the motor mount is a jewel. I was trying to figure out a way to make my 4ch tower hobbie tx / rx work but decided to buy the HK 6 channel. I want flaps and this was going to be the best way to do it. Once my order comes in from HK I will install the electrics and finish my 1 servo flap mod, like Helikiwi's. I did lengthen the flap past the trailing edge of the wing about 1/2" in hopes that it provide more lift close to the body. More of an experiment than anything. It could screw me if it stops to much air from hitting my tail control surfaces. Does any one know if the rotor end prop adapter from headsup work on the Turnigy? I figure it will since I keep hearing they are the same motor. HK is always out of stock so I got a couple from headsup. So that is where the project is now. I still have the stock cub so I can fly while I build this one and just flew floats for the first time last week. Landings are a little tricky but I think it's because im a little more tense from worrying about turning the cub into a torpedo after the fish. Wish me luck and if my parts come in I should have her flying in a couple weeks! Attachments:

Wheel sizes look good, but just try to make sure the tyres are narrow enough that they will fit on the shafts OK. I'd be wary of the Turnigy 35-30 SK motor, read the reviews and compare it with the non SK version - you'll find that the SK version has a lot of quality control problems - some are good and some are not so good. All the reviews for the normal Turnigy 35-30 are beaming (including my own), but there are a lot of unhappy SK owners out there. The normal 35-30 is REALLY fast in the super cub, it almost has enough power for unlimited vertical. If you're looking for unlimited vertical type power then I'd recommend going with the Turnigy 35-36 (non SK version), which also has beaming reviews. Don't worry about the 35-36 perhaps making the plane a little nose heavy. That's easily remedied by adding a little weight to the back of the plane, such as a few layers of profilm, or tape for reinforcement! The MAS 10x6 looks like a really powerful prop for the 1100kv version, it would really scoot! I ran the MAS 9x6 on my turnigy 35-30 at 18A, and the 9x7 prop at 20A. I'd say the 10 x 6 would be perfect for the 35-36 too, it'd be nice and powerful without taxing it too much. Those batteries should have plenty of power for the setup, i've used the 20Cs in my cub and they were brilliant. I used them in a mates T-28 trojan too and they made that think go much quicker than it did with the stock batteries. I'm not at all familiar with Grayson Hobbies, but if you want a good 30A ESC, you can get the 30A hobbywing pentium ESC off of ebay for about $20US. That's a great speed controller, and it uses the same programming card as the turnigy plush (cheap and easy to get from hobbyking or ebay). Oh, and if you want spares prop adaptors for the Turnigy motor, i'd recommend getting them from here: www.giantcod.co.uk/35xx-series-spare-accessory-pack-p-404908.html

Thanks Dillzio, I appreciate the insight. I have been running these tires on my stock cub with out a problem. I did have to lengthen the axle to fit them though. The plane flys great with them, you can tell it's heavier and a little more drag but it lands and takes off awsome over rough ground. I sure hope I am one of the lucky ones with this SK motor. If not I gues it would be a quick swap to a non-SK 35-30. i don't need true vertical sine I am trying to reproduce a true cub, and vertical isn't in it's vocabulary... I will check out giant cod. I havn't since it is in the UK and was hoping to find them in the USA. I shouldn't need to replace them since they are very strong, just not strong enough to suffer a nose landing from the top shelf in the garage onto the concrete floor! I was p**sed when I did that. Another question, one your first flight with the new plane and radio, did it fly pretty easy or did it take alot of tuning on the radios to get it to fly nice again? I am just nervous that the first flight is going to be tricky since I have never programmed radios before and hope I get everything rigged correctly on the cub. I do know to check the elevator to be sure it was going the right way! I have a buddy who picked his Cessna 180 up from the mechanic and didn't check the direction of his elevator... he landed it but he wanted a piece of the mechanice butt when he did. He was lucky he was able to control the elevators backwards Attachments:

First time I flew my cub elevators were reversed, and I hand launched it. As soon as I pulled up, it went straight down into the ground, breaking the cowl and firewall.
I found the cub to be surprisingly easy to fly the first time I flew it, as long as you have all the control surfaces centred pretty well by eye it should go just fine. The postage and handling from giandCOD is pretty cheap, it worked out way cheaper for me than buying them from hobbyking. The shafts are reasonable hard, but they do bend when they hit the ground.

I got all my parts from HK. Hate to say but my antenna is kinda broke, but the wire is still intack and a little CA glue should fix it up. I have the ESC mounted and cut my battery box to fit the Zippy 2200. I'm waiting for my flap hinges and a couple more servos since I decided to do a two servo flap job. one question, what channels are what? I havn't downloaded the programe for the TX so im not sure what channel is what when I plug everything in.

I have my flow over flaps complete and this bird is almost ready to fly. I was going to install my reciever but then my son advised me that I may have messed up by buying a controller. I guess my wife has purchased me one for a present. She still hasn't given it to me so I am in limbo waiting. It has given me time to fix the stock cub though.

Im very interested in how you did your flaps, they sound pretty cool! what TX do you have?

Im very interested in how you did your flaps, they sound pretty cool! what TX do you have? I used plastic hatch hinges for my flaps and epoxied them on. When the flap drops down the front of the flap moves below the bottom of the wing. That should help with mushy elevator and rudder controls while the flaps are deployed. I was worried about minimal control since I have extended my flaps about a 1/4" past the trailing edge of the wing. Not sure what TX I have since my wife hasn't given me my gift, that according to my son is a TX. I did my a HK 6 channel for now till I can sneak a DX6 unless of coarse that is what the gift is!

Suprise!!! My wife is the most awsome of all wifes... She bought me a DX6I for my B-day. Can't wait to get everything hooked up. I need to run to the LHS to get a reversing Y for the flaps and then I should be in the air... Weather pending of course

The bird has finally flown its maiden flight. I have to say that I wish it was not in the middle of winter in Alaska. The first flight was done at -3 deg. f. Calm skies with the sun setting.
First take off was zero flaps and full throttle. This thing jumped into the air and was all over the place. I had to back it down to near zero throttle and trim her up. When I tried pushing the throttle past more than quarter she would pull up and to the right. I was amazed though at how well it flew with hardly any throttle at all, and this waswith a wooden MAS 10x6 prop.
I dropped the flaps about 200 ft up in case I had issues and all it did was go straight up. I had the elevators mixed in at 30% but I had to almost hold the elevator at max forward with less than quarter throttle. After landing I noticed I had the elevator and rudder on the farthest hole and will move it in to give it more control.
This plane was like a kite with the flaps down and near zero throttle. She can land in almost a foot with flaps down and nose up hangin from the prop. Since my ears were going to fall off and my hands hurt I only was able to fly for about 10 minutes. Tomorrow is looking like 20 deg F and light winds so I might have to take her out and play some more.
I want to thank everyone who has helped me with this build. This is such a fun plane with these mods. I wouldl ove to fly it along side a Multiplex fun cub to compare. I will post some pictures and more flight reports as I can get out and fly!!!
